Chattanooga Holds off Furman 69-63 in Women’s Basketball Action

Davidson Finishes with Game-High 22 Points

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's basketball team suffered a 69-63 setback to the Chattanooga Mocs in SoCon action on Thursday evening inside Timmons Arena.

Furman drops to 15-10 on the season and 5-5 in conference play while Chattanooga improves to 7-17 overall and 6-4 in the league.

Le'Jzae Davidson led the Paladins offensively with a game-high 22 points on six 3-pointers. Lindsey Taylor came off the bench to record 11 points on a career-best 7-for-7 mark at the free throw line. Tierra Hodges had 14 rebounds while Taylor Petty set a new career-high with nine. Milica Manojlovic dished out six assists.

Abbey Cornelius led four Mocs in double figures with 16 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Lakelyn Bouldin contributed 15 points while Eboni Williams and Bria Dial had 13 and 12, respectively. Nakeia Burks added seven assists.

Davidson scored nine of her 22 points in the first quarter as Chattanooga opened the game on a 7-0 run. After Davidson connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to cut Furman's deficit down to one, the Mocs responded with a 12-0 run over the next 2:40 to lead 19-6 with 3:56 remaining. The Paladins came back with seven straight points, capped by four consecutive free throws from Taylor, as they trailed 19-13 with 17 seconds left. Bouldin's 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go gave Chattanooga a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.

Furman got as close as seven points twice during the first four minutes of the second quarter with the last coming after Celena Taborn's layup at the 6:04 mark to put the score at 24-17. The Mocs then used a 10-4 run during the next 3:37 to increase their lead out to 34-21 with 2:10 remaining. Chattanooga held a 38-26 lead at halftime.

Davidson began the second half for the Paladins with a 3-pointer to trim the lead down to 38-29. The Mocs led by double digits for almost nine minutes in the third quarter as Furman went 1-for-8 from the field during the period. The Paladins, who started the game 16-for-16 at the charity stripe, made 10-of-12 attempts in the quarter with the final two from Jarya Outten cutting Chattanooga's lead down to 52-39 with 1:19 to go. Dena Jarrells knocked down a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left to give the Mocs a 55-39 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Chattanooga took its largest lead of the game, 57-39, with 9:10 remaining in the contest after a pair of free throws by Williams. Cornelius followed at the 7:28 mark with a layup to give the Mocs a 59-44 advantage. Furman answered with a 15-4 run over nearly a six-minute stretch and trailed by just four points, 63-59, with 1:48 to go after a 3-pointer by Manojlovic. Manojlovic's layup with 48 seconds remaining kept the Paladins within four at 65-61. Chattanooga closed out the game at the free throw line to hold on for the 69-63 victory.

The Paladins concluded the game shooting 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field and held a 41-32 advantage in rebounding. Furman also led 23-9 in bench points.

The Paladins are back at home on Saturday afternoon when they host East Tennessee State at 2 p.m.
