GREENVILLE, S.C. --
John Michael Bertrand pitched six innings of shutout baseball and
Jared Mihalik homered in a 3-for-4 performance to lead Furman to a 9-0 blanking of Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
The victory completed the three-game series sweep for Furman (5-3) and kept Northern Kentucky (0-7) winless on the campaign.
Bertrand (2-0), a redshirt junior left-hander, had little trouble with the Norse, surrendering just four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Â The Alpharetta, Ga., product ended the first, second, and fifth innings with strikeouts, and speared a line drive, which he converted into double play to close the sixth.
Paladin freshman right-hander
Gavin Scott followed Bertrand with two innings of no-hit relief, netting four strikeouts, and
Hank Nichols wrapped up the shutout with a scoreless ninth, fanning two.  All told Paladin pitching notched 13 strikeouts — a season high.
Furman's strong work on the mound was backed up by a potent offense that matched a season high with 14 hits.
Jared Mihalik homered and scored two runs in a 3-for-4 performance, and
Jordan Starkes also had three hits in the contest.
The Paladins got all the runs they would need in the first when
MJ Sasapan's single into left field drove home
David Webel.
Furman made it 3-0 in the second on a
Banks Griffith two-out, two-run base hit into center field.
Jared Mihalik's first home run of the season, a leadoff shot to left field in the fourth helped begin a string of three straight two-run frames, that blew the game open for the Paladins.
Norse starting pitcher Kyle Service (0-1) was charged with the loss after getting roughed up for five runs on eight hits over four innings.
Northern Kentucky managed just five hits in the contest.
Furman plays at Presbyterian on Tuesday in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
