GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 37 Furman opened the SoCon season with a 5-2 victory over Chattanooga then blanked Limestone, 4-0, to conclude Friday's doubleheader at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to open the match versus the Mocs. Sophomores Madison Dillon and Julia Adams, who rank 38th nationally, blew past Emma Van Hee and Caroline Gibbens, 6-1, at flight one, and juniors Georgie Walker and MaryAnn Rompf recorded a 6-3 advantage over Jessie Young and Bogdana Zaporozhets at flight two. In the number three contest, senior Danni Vines and junior Carol Elizabeth Kerman blanked Callie Billman and Grace Anne Dunavant, 6-0. Â
Furman won four singles matches over Chattanooga, three in straight sets. At flight one, Adams topped Young, 6-2, 6-0, and Rompf came from behind for a 6-4, 7-6, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Zaporozhets at flight two. Dillon defeated Lilly Holmes, 6-2, 6-2, at number three, and in the flight four match up, Walker downed Billman, 6-0, 6-1. Â
Chattanooga (6-5, 0-1 SoCon) picked up wins in the bottom two singles matches. At flight five, Polina Goloputova beat freshman Maggie Pate, 6-1, 6-1, and Van Hee held off Vines, 6-4, 6-4, at number six.
In the evening match versus Limestone, Furman won two out of three doubles matches to claim the opening point. Adams and Dillon blanked Caroline St-Antoine and Alexandra Dolfi, 6-0, at flight one, and Pate and Kerman defeated Luana Hermes and Alexis Ramirez, 6-0, at number three. The flight two match was unfinished, with Walker and Rompf leading Camille Haus and Felicitas Picinini, 4-1.
The Paladins won the top three singles matches for the victory. Dillon moved to flight one, where she beat Haus, 6-1, 6-2, and Rompf posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dolfi at number two. At flight three, Pate topped St-Antoine, 6-2, 6-0. Â
The flight four match was unfinished. Kerman won flight one, 6-3, but Picinini led the second set, 5-4, when the contest was clinched. Matches at flights five and six were not played.
Furman (12-3, 1-0 SoCon) hits the road next weekend for a spring break trip to California. The Paladins will play at Santa Clara on March 8 to kick off the trip.
