Fordham Rolls Past Furman, 8-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- John Stankiewicz pitched six strong innings and Fordham banged out 14 hits on the way to an 8-3 victory over Furman in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium.

The win earns Fordham (4-6) the series win heading into Sunday's noon finale.

Stankiewicz (1-1), the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Year, allowed two runs on just four hits and two walks while striking out five before departing with a 3-2 lead.

The Rams backed him up with two runs in the seventh for a 5-2 advantage, and Gabe Karslo worked the final innings to notch the save, his first of the season.

The loss was charged to John Michael Bertrand (2-1), who yielded three runs, all earned, on eight hits over six innings.

Fordham took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Alvin Melendez's two-run single, but Furman tied it up an inning later when Jordan Starkes deposited a Stankiewicz offering over the left center field for a two-run home run, the first round tripper of his career.

The Rams regained the lead in the sixth when catcher Andy Semo, who entered the game hitting just .133, bounded a two-out double just inside third base to drive home Melendez.

Fordham took advantage of a dropped fly ball in right field by Paladin freshman Eli Weisner in the seventh to plate a pair of unearned runs to make it a 5-2 game, and the Rams tacked on three on more in the eighth, headlined by a leaoff solo home run by Zach Selinger.

Furman managed only four hits in the game and committed four errors, which led to four unearned runs.

MJ Sasapan had two of the Paladins' four hits.

Jason Coules paced Fordham's 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 performance.
