Greenville, S.C. – Noah Gurley scored 15 points to pace five Paladins in double figures as Furman snapped Mercer's six-game winning streak and claimed its 10
th straight win at Timmons Arena with a 79-57 triumph over the Bears on Wednesday night.
The victory improved the first place Paladins to 19-5 overall and 9-2 in SoCon play, while the Bears slipped to 12-12 overall and 6-5 in the league.
Trailing 16-11 with under 11:30 to go in the first half, Furman reeled off a 23-3 run to take control of the game. Senior
Jordan Lyons hit three triples during the middle of the run to move into first place on Furman's career three-point ledger with 274 career three-point baskets and sophomore
Mike Bothwell capped the spurt with three straight free throws to stake the Paladins to a 34-19 lead with 4:44 left in the half. During the stretch, Furman held the Bears to just one basket in a span of over eight minutes en route to a 39-24 half time lead.
The Paladins, who shot 57.1% from the field, outscored Mercer 34-24 in the paint and fashioned a 19-7 edge in points off turnovers, shot 65% in the second half, including 5-of-10 beyond the arc, to build its lead to as many as 29 points. Despite Mercer holding a 41-29 advantage on the glass and grabbing 20 offensive boards, Furman held the Bears to just 33.3% shooting and forced 18 turnovers.
Gurley hit 6-of-8 shots to score his game-high 15 points, while Lyons and
Jalen Slawson totaled 13 points apiece.
Clay Mounce tallied 12 points and a team-best six boards. Bothwell rounded out Furman's double figure scorers with 10 points and matched a career-high with five assists.
Kamar Robertson led Mercer with 15 points and Maciej Bender finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Furman held the Bears' leading scorer, Djordje Dimitrijevic to just six points on 2-of-13 shooting.
The Paladin victory marked the 90
th of Lyons' career and tied him with 2019 seniors
Andrew Brown and
Matt Rafferty as the all-time winningest players in school history.
Furman returns to action Saturday when it travels to Cullowhee, N.C., to face Western Carolina. Tip-off at the Ramsey Center is slated for 2 p.m.
