Birmingham, Ala. – Le'Jzae Davidson led four Paladins in double figures on Thursday evening as the Furman women's basketball team completed the season sweep of the Samford Bulldogs with a 72-59 victory inside the Pete Hanna Center.
Furman improves to 15-8 overall and 5-3 in the SoCon while Samford drops to 11-12 on the season and 6-2 in conference play.
Davidson was 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and led the Paladins with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Milica Manojlovic also finished 5-of-10 shooting overall, and 3-for-6 behind the 3-point line, and recorded 13 points while dishing out seven assists.
Grace van Rij set a new career-high with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting while
Taylor Petty was 5-of-6 at the free throw line and scored 10 points.
Natalie Armstrong and Ta'Naisha Hill both finished with 10 points to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Sarah Myers added nine points and a team-leading 10 rebounds. Shauntai Battle dished out five assists.
Furman shot a season-high 60.0 percent (27-of-45) from the field highlighted by a 14-for-23 mark in the second half.
With the score tied at 17-17 after the first quarter, the Paladins would outscore Samford 18-8 in the second period while limiting the Bulldogs to just 3-of-12 shooting. Furman closed out the final 5:29 of the first half on an 11-3 run and built a 10-point lead heading into halftime. Manojlovic's 3-pointer with 55 seconds left before intermission gave the Paladins a 35-25 lead.
Furman was 9-of-16 shooting in the third quarter and scored 24 points. The Bulldogs cut their deficit down to seven points, 39-32, with 7:22 remaining before a layup by van Rij and triple from Manojlovic extended the Paladins' lead back to double digits. Furman used a 13-3 run in the later stages, a stretch of just over three minutes, to take its largest lead of the game at 57-37 after Davidson made 1-of-2 free throws. The Paladins led 59-42 heading to the fourth quarter.
Furman led by double figures for the entirety of the fourth quarter as Davidson started the period with a layup to put it ahead 61-42 at the 9:27 mark. Samford got as close as 12 points, 66-54, with 4:21 left. The Paladins answered with the next four points to increase their advantage back to 16 points, 70-54, with 2:31 to go. The teams traded the final three baskets of the game to put the final score at 72-59.
Furman concluded the game holding a 30-25 advantage in rebounding. The Paladins also led in points in the paint (28-26), points off turnovers (16-11) and fast break points (5-0). Both teams finished with 12 second chance points.
Furman concludes its three-game conference road trip on Saturday afternoon traveling to Mercer for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
