GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman defeated Middle Tennessee State, 6-1, Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Furman won two of three doubles matches to score the opening point. Senior Katarina Kozarov and sophomore Julia Adams, who rank 21st nationally, posted a 6-2 victory over Lee Barnard and Zani Bernard at flight one, and juniors Georgie Walker and MaryAnn Rompf blew past Noelle Mauro and Love-Star Alexis, 6-1, at number three. The flight two match was unfinished with sophomore Madison Dillon and senior Danni Vines leading Lidia Burrows and Marta Peris Herrero, 4-3.
The Paladins won five out of six singles matches, all in straight sets. Thirteenth-ranked Kozarov blanked Lee Barnard, 6-0, 6-0, in the top-seeded contest, and Adams tallied a 6-3, 6-3 victory versus Zani Barnard at flight two. In the number three match, Rompf held off Peris Herrero, 6-1, 6-4, and at number five, Dillon beat Mauro, 6-0, 6-3. Freshman Maggie Pate entered the lineup at flight six, where she defeated Zoe Klapman, 6-4, 6-0.
MTSU (3-3) scored at flight four, where Burrows topped Walker, 6-1, 6-4.
Furman (6-3) will entertain both Marshall and Emmanuel Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center. First serve versus the Thundering Herd is set for noon, and the Emmanuel match will follow at 4:30 p.m.
