Furman Holds off Bucknell, 19-14

LaMotte Scores Four Goals, Demis Adds Six Assists in Victory

Greenville, S.C. – Nine different Paladins recorded a goal on Tuesday afternoon as the Furman women's lacrosse team picked up a 19-14 non-conference victory over the Bucknell Bison at Paladin Stadium.

Furman improves to 3-4 on the season while Bucknell drops to 3-5 overall.

Hannah Demis led the Paladins with seven points on six assists and one goal while Grace Pollak added six points on a hat trick and three assists. Kyra LaMotte set career-highs for goals and points in a game after finishing with five points on four goals and one assist. Leah Nonnenmann also contributed a hat trick. Ellie Roser, Hannah Dintino and Meagan Beal all scored a career-high two goals. Sydney Catts and Lauren Farber each collected one goal. Pollak and Kaylee Coleman won four draws while Meghan Deehan picked up four ground balls. Eight different players caused one turnover. In goal, Deehan made six saves.

Demis' six assists are the second-most in a game in program history and fell one shy of tying her own school record of seven, set last season against Wofford.

Eve Calabria compiled a team-best five points for the Bison on four goals and one assist. Kate Fiore and Caroline Walsh both recorded hat tricks. Tegan Warren dished out two assists. Fiore and Morgan Steinhacker both collected two ground balls. Jessie Britton won four draws. Abby Neff tied Fiore for the team-lead with two caused turnovers. Lauren Kinnee registered six saves in goal.

LaMotte wasted little time giving Furman an early 1-0 lead, scoring just 1:34 into the contest off the assist from Pollak. The Paladins opened the game on a 6-1 run as LaMotte, Dintino, Roser, Nonnenmann and Pollak each scored goals. Pollak gave Furman a 6-1 advantage at the 18:41 mark. Following a Bucknell goal, Roser came back with her second goal of the contest with 16:33 remaining to give the Paladins a 7-2 lead.

The Bison closed out the final 13:42 of the half scoring four consecutive goals as Furman led 7-6 at intermission.

Bucknell continued its run into the second half, scoring 1:26 into the period to even the score at 7-7. The Paladins responded with back-to-back goals by Pollak and Catts to go in front 9-7 with 25:58 left. After the Bison made it a one-goal game, Furman would go on a 5-0 run during the next 5:38 and take a 14-8 lead. Nonnenmann picked up two of her three goals throughout the run. Bucknell answered with four straight goals and trailed 14-12 with 8:20 remaining. The teams traded a pair of goals over nearly a one-minute stretch as the score sat at 15-13 with 6:52 to go.

The Paladins broke the game open over the final 5:21 outscoring the Bison 4-1. Pollak, Beal, LaMotte and Demis each score a goal as Furman increased its lead out to 19-13 with 2:35 left. The Bison added a goal just before the end of regulation to put the final score at 19-14.

The Paladins held a 32-27 advantage over Bucknell in shots and also led 21-13 in draw controls. Both teams finished with 11 ground balls. Furman forced the Bison into 12 turnovers.

The Paladins travel to Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday afternoon to face Winthrop at 3 p.m.
