Box Score HOMEWOOD, ALA. -- Andrea Cournoyer scored 28 points and Samford used a strong second quarter to take the lead en route to a 82-55 victory over visiting Furman in women's Southern Conference basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
The victory earned Samford (9-7, 6-1 SoCon) the two-game season sweep of Furman (5-11, 1-6 SoCon), which dropped its fourth straight decision — all on the road.
The Paladins, who were led by
Tierra Hodges' 18 points, have played the SoCon's toughest schedule to date, facing the top four teams in the standings in their seven league games, including five on the road. Â Furman has played just two Division I home games this season as the calendar turns to February.
Cournoyer, who torched Furman for 34 points in Thursday's 78-72 victory, again had her way against the Paladins, connecting on 10-of-17 shots, including 3-of-5 3-pointers. Â The junior transfer guard added three rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs, who shot a blistering 52.5 percent from the field (32x61), trailed 22-20 after one period but took command in the second quarter, outscoring the Paladins 17-8 on the strength of Cournoyer's eight points, to take a 37-30 lead into intermission.
Samford widened its advantage in the third, opening with an 8-2 run to go up 45-32 following a Cournoyer's layup three minutes into the period.
The Bulldogs flipped a rebounding deficit in Thursday's game by posting a 49-23 advantage in Saturday's rematch, getting a game high 15 caroms from Annie Ramil.
Natalie Armstrong tallied 17 points, and Ramil followed with 16 points for the Bulldogs.
Celena Taborn joined Hodges in double figures for Furman with 13 points, and
Greyson Boone finished with 12, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range.
Freshman
Tate Walters racked up 12 assists, the highest tally by a Paladin since Whitney Bunn registered 12 dishes in a 77-68 victory over UNC Greensboro during the 2014-15 season.
Furman returns home to face East Tennessee State in a pair of league matchups next week at Timmons Arena.
