ATHENS, GA. -- Senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel won the doubles black draw and Connel was victorious in the singles red draw this weekend at the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga.
Mitric and Connell beat Dartmouth's Carlos Guerrero Alvarez and Hikaru Takeda of Dartmouth, 8-6, in the opening round then won by walk over over Beau Pelletier and Carter Morgan of South Carolina. In the finals, the two Paladin doubles teams squared off, with Mitric and Connell defeating James Roelofse and Emil Westling, 8-4. Roelofse and Westling posted an 8-2 victory over John Dransfeld and Ignacio Sandoval of UNCW in round one then topped Dartmouth's Andy Ilie and Alejandro Quiles, 8-4, in the semifinals.
In singles action, Connell scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Angel Diaz of Tennessee in round one then defeated Charlotte's Stefanos Savva, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he recorded a 3-6, 7-6(7), 7-5 victory over Britton Johnston of Georgia, then Connel beat Coy Simon of Charlotte, 6-4, 6-4 for the title.
Roelofse defeated South Carolina's Pelletier, 1-6, 6-5, by retirement in the first round, and Westling beat Spencer Gray of Auburn, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in a consolation match. Mitric won two consolation matches, the first over Lukas Engelhardt of Ole Miss, by walk over, and the second over South Carolina's Jake Beasley, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Furman will compete at the ITA Carolina Regionals in Cary, N.C., Oct. 22-26.
