Gaither Named SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

Greenville, S.C. – Furman sophomore forward Nieva Gaither has been tabbed the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for games played October 12-18, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.

Gaither led Furman offensively with six points on three goals last weekend in wins over VMI and UNC Greensboro.

In a 3-2 win over VMI on Friday, Gaither finished with a career-high four points on two goals, also a career high. Both of the sophomore's goals came in the second half as the Paladins scored three goals in the period to rally back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Her first goal came in the 70th minute when Jasmine Greene sent a cross into the 18-yard box, allowing Gaither to score on a header inside the left post from 11 yards out. Less than three minutes later, Gaither beat a VMI defender one-on-one and scored from the top of the 18-yard box, netting her fourth goal of the season.

On Sunday, the native of Lilburn, Ga., sealed Furman's 2-0 win over the Spartans with a goal in the 56th minute, extending the Paladins' lead in the shutout.

Gaither is the second Furman player to receive player of the week honors from the conference this season. Hannah Farr earned the weekly recognition on August 24.

The Paladins conclude their regular season schedule this weekend with road contests at Mercer (October 22) and The Citadel (October 24).
