Greenville, S.C. – Bella Tolone and
Natalie Dunn both registered double-doubles on Wednesday evening to lead the Furman Paladins to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-15) victory over the Wofford Terriers in Southern Conference volleyball action inside Alley Gymnasium.
Furman improves to 7-12 on the season and 2-7 in conference play, while Wofford drops to 10-11 overall and 4-5 in the league. The Paladins swept the Terriers for the first time since October 10, 2018 in Spartanburg.
Tolone recorded her team-leading 10
th double-double of the season and Dunn added her first. Tolone finished with 11 kills and 14 digs while Dunn contributed 10 kills and 10 digs.
Neci Harris led all players with 14 kills and hit a career-high .650.
Sarah Turner dished out 20 assists and
Ella Abraham provided 12.
Andrea Aceveda finished with a match-high 18 digs.
Kennedy Smith led Wofford with eight kills and tallied 13 digs. Emily Hodsdon collected 22 assists and Kaitlyn Brown 14 digs.
The teams traded the opening 10 points of the first set before Furman went on a 5-1 run to lead 10-6 following a Terrier attack error. Wofford rallied back to within two, 12-10, but the Paladins responded with four straight points to extend their lead out to 16-10 on Tolone's service ace. Furman outscored the Terriers 9-5 the rest of the way and won 25-15 after a kill by Tolone.
The Paladins posted a .229 hitting percentage in the first set and limited Wofford to -.031.
Furman began the second set scoring five of the first six points and held an early 5-1 lead after a Terrier attack error. Wofford responded with an 8-2 run to take a 9-7 advantage. The Terriers later pushed their lead to 18-12 on a kill from Sarah MacLean. The Paladins came back to tie the set at 20-20 courtesy of an 8-2 run capped by a kill from Abraham. The teams exchanged the next five points before a Wofford attack error gave Furman a 23-22 lead. A kill from
Sydney Tanner and service ace from Aceveda secured the 25-22 victory for the Paladins.
The Terriers tallied four of the initial six points of the third set until Furman responded with a 9-3 run to go ahead 11-7 on Tolone's kill, forcing Wofford into a timeout. After the Terriers cut the Paladins' lead down to 11-10, Furman broke the set open courtesy of a 9-1 run and held a 20-11 lead when Turner recorded a service ace. The Paladins maintained their nine-point lead twice at 23-14 and 24-15. A solo block from Harris gave Furman its second nine-point advantage. Chandler Parker combined for a block.
Furman concluded the match hitting .174 as a team while holding Wofford to .008. The last time the Paladins held an opponent under .100 hitting came on February 21, 2021 when they limited Chattanooga to .055 during a 3-1 victory in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Furman held a 41-26 advantage in kills, 38-23 in assists and 60-49 in digs. The Paladins also finished with a season-high 15.0 total blocks led by eight (one solo, seven assisted) from Watkins. It marked the sixth time this season that Furman has posted double-digit blocks in a match.
The Paladins are off until next weekend, October 28-29, when they travel to Chattanooga and East Tennessee State for a pair of SoCon matches.
