Furman Closes out Regular Season with 4-0 Win at The Citadel

Paladins Are No. 2 Seed for SoCon Women's Soccer Championship

Charleston, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a four-game winning streak following a 4-0 victory over The Citadel Bulldogs in Southern Conference action, Sunday afternoon at WLI Field.

Furman moves to 10-5-1 on the season and 6-3 in SoCon play, while The Citadel drops to 9-6-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the conference.

With the win and a loss by Western Carolina at UNC Greensboro, the Paladins have clinched the No. 2 seed for the 2021 SoCon Women's Soccer Championship. Furman will host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds at Stone Stadium, which are scheduled for October 29 and October 31.

The Paladins receive a first round bye and will play the winner of No. 7 The Citadel and No. 10 VMI, which is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, on Friday, October 29 at 6 p.m.

Kyndal Anderson led Furman offensively with two goals, tying her career high. Nieva Gaither and Julia Nicholas both added goals, while Faith Hauberg, Grace Baghdady and Ashlyn Goila each registered an assist. In goal, Addison Corn posted her second shutout of the season with two saves.

The Paladins collected two first half goals from Gaither and Anderson over the final 12 minutes to hold a 2-0 lead at halftime. Gaither put Furman on the board first in the 38th minute on her eighth goal of the season with Baghdady receiving credit for the assist. Anderson netted her first goal of the game, unassisted, during the 48th minute to extend the Paladins' lead to two goals.

Anderson contributed her second goal, giving her a team-best 10 for the year, in the second half along with Nicholas' second of the season. Nicholas made it a 3-0 contest in the 70th minute with Hauberg earning the assist. Anderson put the final score at 4-0 in the 77th minute scoring off Goila's assist.

Goila recorded her second assist of the season while Hauberg and Baghdady each collected their first.

Furman finished the game holding a 25-8 advantage in shots and 17-2 in attempts on goal. The Paladins also led 10-3 in corner kicks.

Anderson attempted a team-high eight shots and four attempts on goal for Furman. Gaither added six shots and Isabella Gutierrez four attempts on goal.

Mel Mikoy was one of three Bulldogs to have two shots and led the team with two attempts on net. Goalkeeper Jess Newton grabbed 13 saves.
