ETSU Overpowers Furman, 3-0

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - Josannah Vazquez notched 16 kills to lead East Tennessee State past Furman, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-17), Friday night at Brooks Gymnasium in Johnson City, Tenn.

The Paladins fall to 7-14 overall and 2-9 in SoCon play, while the Buccaneers improve to 10-12 overall and 6-5f in SoCon play.

Senior Neci Harris hit .319 and led Furman with 10 kills, and junior Sarah Turner recorded 23 assists.  Junior Natalie Dunn tallied 12 digs, while freshman Bella Tolone and junior Andrea Aceveda each logged 11 digs.

For ETSU, Caroline Dykes posted a team-high 36 assists, and Taylor Roberts added 19 digs.

The teams battled through three ties to reach 6-all to open the match before ETSU scored three-straight to take a 9-6 lead.  Furman battled back, winning four of the next five points off kills from Dunn coupled with Buccaneer errors, to tie the match at 10-10.  ETSU went on a 7-2 run to lead, 17-12, then a kill from Tolone kept the Paladins in the match at 17-13, but the Bucs put together an 8-1 run to win the set, 25-14.

ETSU jumped out to a 7-1 lead to open set two, but the Paladins took advantage of a block solo and kill by Harris for a 5-1 run, cutting the deficit to 9-6.  The Bucs logged a 10-4 run of their own to lead, 19-10.  Harris again recorded a kill, followed by kills from Dunn and sophomore Kelsey Watkins, to keep the Paladins in the set, 21-14, before ETSU scored four of the last five points to take the set, 25-15.

Harris notched a kill and a block solo early in set three to tie the set at 3-apiece, then ETSU put together another 10-4 run to lead, 13-7.  Harris scored consecutive kills to cut the lead to 13-9, and the Paladin stayed within five points at 18-13 after back to back kills from sophomore Maya Mrus and sophomore Sydney Tanner.  ETSU appeared to have the match in hand at 23-14, but Furman scored three of the next four points off a block assist by Tanner and Watkins, an ETSU service error, and a kill from Tolone, but the Paladin rally fell short as the Bucs won the set, 25-17.

The Paladins will entertain The Citadel Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Alley Gymnasium.
