Furman Grinds Up Wofford, 42-20

Wynn Rushes For 204 Yards, 2 TDs; Wilson Throws For 189 Yards, TD In Starting Debut

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Devin Wynn rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Jace Wilson fashioned an impressive career starting debut, passing for 189 yards and a score, while rushing for another, to power Furman past Wofford, 42-20, in the 95th renewal of the Deep South's Oldest Football Rivalry Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.

Wynn, a fifth-year senior from Greensboro, Ga., ran a career high 31 times for his 204 yards and scored on runs of two and seven yards, helping Furman (3-2, 1-1 SoCon) overcome a pair of 10-point first half deficits and roll to the victory, its first over Wofford (1-4, 0-3 SoCon) in Spartanburg since 2006.

Wilson, a true freshman from Missouri City, Texas, connected on 14 of 23 passes in the contest, threw a 26-yard touchdown strike to Wynn, and added a seven-yard scoring run for the Paladins, who tallied 73 plays to Wofford's 44 and chewed up the Terriers for 289 yards on the ground on the way to finishing with 478 total yards.

Wofford used a long run, pass, and punt return to account for its 17 first half points, going up 17-7 when Devin Mathews collected a Peyton Derrick pass over the middle and sprinted 63 yards for a touchdown midway through the second quarter.

It was pretty much all Furman after that, however, as the Paladins covered 75 yards on seven plays on the ensuing possession to cut it to 17-14 when Wilson took an option keeper around left end for a seven-yard touchdown run with 5:41 remaining in the half.

On their next possession the Paladins took advantage of an offsides penalty on a punt to convert a first down with a Wilson one-yard sneak at the Furman 36, and four plays later Wilson hit Devin Wynn for a 26-yard scoring connection to give Furman a 21-17 lead following the PAT.

The Paladins dominated the second half, primarily behind its offensive line, which powered a ground game that pounded out 211 yards and delivered touchdowns on each of Furman's first three possessions.

Ryan DeLuca's 7-yard scoring run off an option pitch stretched Furman's lead to 28-17.  Following a Wofford field goal, the Paladins put the game away with two more touchdowns, the first coming on Wynn's second of the contest, covering seven yards, and the second via Wayne Anderson, Jr.'s six-yard burst up the middle midway through the fourth quarter following freshman cornerback Dominic Morris' interception return to the Terrier 49.

Wynn's 204 yards was the second highest tally of his career, trailing only the 217 yards he registered in a 58-14 win over Samford in 2019.  The performance upped his career rushing tally to 2,897 yards, solidifying his seventh place standing on Furman's career rushing yards ledger.  The two rushing touchdowns, meanwhile, improved Wynn's career tally to 29, tying him with Mike Glenn (1978-80) and Jerodis Williams (2009-12) for eighth all-time in program history.

Senior wide receiver Ryan DeLuca's 37-yard reception in the contest pushed him over 1,000 receiving yards for his career (1,020).

Junior All-America tight end Ryan Miller paced all receviers with four catches for 56 yards.

Linebackers Evan DiMaggio and Braden Gilby headed up Furman's tackle register with five stops apiece.

Furman returns home to face The Citadel next Saturday in Paladin Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
