Louisville, Ky. – Mike Bothwell had a game high 30 points and
Garrett Hien contributed a career best 18 on Friday evening to lead the Furman men's basketball team to an 80-72 overtime victory over the Louisville Cardinals from the KFC Yum! Center.
Furman, who defeated Louisville for the first time in program history, improves to 2-0 on the season. With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 1-1 overall.
The defeat of Louisville was the first by the Paladins over an ACC opponent since a 79-74 overtime win at Florida State on December 4, 2000. Furman also snapped the Cardinals' 59-game winning streak in November home games, including a 46-0 mark in the KFC Yum! Center.
"Just really proud of our team. Just the fight that we put forward tonight, to be able to come in here and outrebound this group that was really bigger than us in almost every position. I couldn't be more proud and it wasn't always pretty," said Paladin head coach
Bob Richey. "We didn't come in here and make 22 threes again, but we played hard and we responded. We got down. We had to deal with the environment. We had to deal with foul trouble, but our guys didn't quit and as a coach that's what you want, right? Just keep fighting, keep believing and keep trusting. The payoff is what they were able to have tonight, pulling off this win in overtime."
Bothwell poured in his 30 points highlighted by a career best 13-of-15 performance at the free throw line while shooting 7-of-17 from the field. Hien matched his career high of eight rebounds and was 7-of-16 shooting.
Alex Hunter, who became the 48
th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points on Friday, contributed 17 on five 3-pointers, eight rebounds and five assists.
Jalen Slawson had a team high nine rebounds and
Marcus Foster tied his career best of seven.
Conley Garrison also dished out five assists.
Noah Locke led Louisville with 20 points while Jae'Lyn Withers and Jarrod West provided 14 and 10. Malik Williams posted a game high 10 rebounds and Withers added nine. Mason Faulkner led all players with seven assists.
The Paladins trailed by five points, 67-62, with 2:43 remaining in the contest before Bothwell and Hien combined for five consecutive points. Hien's and-1 opportunity tied the score at 67-67 with 1:04 remaining. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Furman connected on three of its four field goal attempts during overtime while converting on 7-of-8 free throws. Defensively, the Paladins limited the Cardinals to just 2-of-10 shooting and 1-of-7 behind the 3-point line.
Furman began overtime scoring the first seven points, continuing its 5-0 run from regulation, to take a 74-67 lead on a pair of Bothwell free throws with 2:42 left. Louisville got as close as four points, 76-72, with 54 seconds to go on Locke's 3-pointer. Those would be the final points that the Cardinals recorded as the Paladins closed out the game at the free throw line. Bothwell and Foster made Furman's final four attempts at the line to seal the 80-72 win.
The Paladins held an early 8-4 lead less than six minutes into the first half before a 16-8 run, covering 4:02, increased their advantage to 24-12 highlighted by 3-pointers from Hunter, Bothwell and Hien. Hien's offensive rebound and layup at the 9:28 mark kept Furman ahead 26-15. Louisville responded with a 20-6 run and went in front 32-30 with 3:11 remaining. The Paladins answered with a layup by
Joe Anderson less than a minute later to even the score at 35-35. The Cardinals scored the last four points to hold a 39-35 lead at halftime.
Louisville took its largest lead of the game at 41-35 with 17:04 left to mark the first field goal of the second half. Trailing 42-38 with 15:23 to go, Furman came back with a 9-0 run, including six of the points coming at the free throw line, and led 47-42 at the 12:55 mark capped by Bothwell's triple. Neither team would lead by more than four points over the next 6:49 until the Cardinals got a free throw from Williams to lead 61-56. The Paladins cut their deficit down to one, 63-62, on Hunter's 3-pointer with 4:04 left, but Louisville answered with four straight points to lead 67-62.
Furman concluded the game shooting 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from 3-point range. The Paladins also made 20 of their 26 free throw attempts.
Furman held an 8-2 advantage in second chance points while both teams finished with 10 points off turnovers and 24 points in the paint.
The Paladins conclude their two-game road trip on Monday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. ET against Belmont, ranked No. 2 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, in Nashville, Tenn.
