Slawson’s Double-Double Guides Furman Past Radford, 81-64

Paladins Win First All-Time Meeting vs. Radford

Greenville, S.C. – Jalen Slawson recorded his first double-double of the season on 16 points and 10 rebounds Friday evening to lift the Furman men's basketball team to an 81-64 victory over the Radford Highlanders from Timmons Arena.

Furman, who won its 22nd consecutive non-conference contest at Timmons Arena on Friday, improves to 3-1 on the season. With the loss, Radford drops to 1-3 overall.

Slawson finished the game shooting 5-of-9 from the field and made all six of his free throw attempts. The Summerville, S.C., native posted a season high four steals while registering two blocks and two assists. Mike Bothwell poured in 15 points and six assists, while Conley Garrison had 14 points, five rebounds and a season best four steals. Garrett Hien posted 11 points and tied his career high of five assists. Marcus Foster came off the bench and tied his career high in points with nine.

Shaquan Jules led the Highlanders with 12 points while Josiah Jeffers contributed nine. Chryee Walker pulled down nine rebounds to go with eight points. Camron McNeil, Dravon Mangum and Artese Stapleton each had three assists.

Radford had cut the Paladins' lead down to nine, 61-52, with 6:23 remaining in the game on Walker's layup. Furman responded by going on a 9-2 run over the next 1:48, with Bothwell and Slawson scoring all nine points, to extend its lead out to 70-54. Garrison would give the Paladins their largest lead of the game at 73-56 with 3:29 remaining following his 3-pointer.

Furman maintained its double-digit lead over the final three minutes with the Highlanders only getting as close as 13 points twice with the last coming at 77-64 with 1:04 left. Hunter and Slawson made all four free throws down the stretch for the Paladins to secure their 17-point victory.

Furman missed on its first eight field goal attempts to start the game while Radford began 1-of-8 overall with the only basket coming at the 17:27 mark when Tai'Reon Joseph knocked down a triple. After a layup by Foster, Alex Williams made back-to-back 3-pointers with his last tying the game at 8-8 with 13:47 left. Slawson followed the next possession with a layup to give the Paladins their first lead of the game. The Highlanders answered with six straight points to take their largest lead, 14-10, with 10:15 remaining. Jules put Radford back in the lead at the 7:47 mark with his dunk but Garrison came back two possessions later to give Furman the lead for good on his layup.

The Paladins had built their lead out to six points, 27-21, with 4:33 to go until the Highlanders cut their deficit down to three after scoring five of the next seven points. Furman closed out the final 2:27 of the first half on a 9-2 run and went into halftime leading 38-28.

The Paladins led by as many as 10 points to start the second half when Bothwell's layup gave them a 41-31 lead after Jeffers opened the period with a 3-pointer. Radford trimmed Furman's lead down to five points three times over the next 6:55 before making it a 54-50 contest with 10:08 remaining after a 3-pointer from Rashun Williams. Slawson, Hien and Garrison combined for seven consecutive points following the triple and put the Paladins back in front, 61-50, with 7:37 left.

Furman concluded the game shooting 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-of-19) behind the 3-point line. The Paladins were 20-of-22 at the charity stripe and marked the first time since February 28, 2019 at Samford that they have shot at least 90 percent from the free throw line.

Furman limited the Highlanders to just 37.5 percent (24-of-64) overall and 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from 3-point range.

The Paladins held a 34-28 advantage in points in the paint and 11-4 in fast break points.
