GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Tierra Hodges and
Tate Walters scored 20 points apiece to propel Furman to a 64-49 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
The win, Furman's fifth straight in the series with UNC Asheville, improved the Paladins to 3-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-2 overall.
Hodges, who played all 40 minutes, made 6-of-13 shots and tallied eight of her points at the free throw line, converting 8-of-9 chances, while also registering a game high 16 rebounds in the contest. Â The double-double was her third in four games this season and 18th in the Paladins' last 29 contests.
Walters was equally proficient from the field, finding the mark on 5-of-9 shots while tallying nine points at the charity stripe on 11 opportunities.
The Bulldogs connected on 21 field goals to the Paladins' 20, but Furman outscored UNC Asheville by 19 points at the free throw line, draining 21-of-26 attempts to the Bulldogs 2-of-3.
Two Hodges layups in the final 36 seconds of the first quarter gave Furman a 17-10 lead, and a Hodges 3-point play with 2:58 remaining in the first half stretched Furman's advantage to 23-12.
Furman, which led 29-17 at the half, saw UNCA slice the lead to 38-35 on a Maliyah Lockett jump shot at the 2:26 juncture of the third quarter.Â
The Paladins answered with a 5-0 spurt via a
Greyson Boone 3-pointer and two Hodges free throws for a 43-35 advantage.
Furman's lead remained in single digits until Walters buried a 3-pointer with 2:46 to go to push the advantage to 57-46 and spark a 10-0 run that put the game on ice for the Paladins.
Grace van Rij joined Hodges and Walters in double figures with 11 points.
UNC Asheville's Nadiria Evans led all scorers with 23 points.
Furman plays host to Erskine on Monday in a 7:0 p.m. contest.
