Birmingham, Ala. – Sarah MacLean had a game high 18 kills to lead the fourth-seeded Wofford Terriers to a 3-1 (25-22, 27-29, 21-25, 15-25) victory over the No. 9 seed Furman volleyball team in the semifinals of the SoCon Volleyball Championship, Saturday evening from Samford's Pete Hanna Center.
Furman's season ends with a 9-20 overall record while Wofford, with the win, improves to 17-13 overall and advances to the championship match on Sunday.
Bella Tolone led the Paladins offensively with her team-leading 13
th double-double of the season on 14 kills and 10 digs.
Chandler Parker and
Neci Harris both contributed nine kills and three digs.
Sydney Tanner added eight kills.
Sarah Turner dished out 24 assists and
Ella Abraham posted 20. Defensively,
Andrea Aceveda had a team high 17 digs and
Maya Mrus registered 13.
MacLean paced the Terrier offense on .469 hitting and Emory Wyatt recorded 10 kills and seven assisted blocks. Emily Hodsdon dished out 43 assists. Kennedy Smith and Kaitlyn Brown finished with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Sarah Barham led all players with a game high 11 blocks (two solo, nine assisted).
Furman held Wofford to .000 hitting in the first set while Tolone and Parker both tallied four kills. The Paladins opened the set on a 7-2 run and would build their lead to 12-6 after a kill by
Mikaela Schultz. The Terriers responded with an 11-4 run and took its first lead of the set at 17-16 following a Furman attack error. Wofford would later extend its lead to 21-19 on Smith's service ace. The Paladins closed out the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-22. Furman recorded the final two points on Mrus' service ace and a Terrier attack error.
Wofford took an early 8-4 lead in the second set before the Paladins came back with a 10-3 run. With the score tied at 11-11, Furman recorded three consecutive points capped by a combination block from Tolone and
Kelsey Watkins. The Paladins then scored eight of the next nine points to take their largest lead of the set at 22-12 after a Terrier bad set. Wofford rallied back courtesy of a 13-2 run and recaptured the lead at 25-24. The teams traded the next five points before the Terriers capped off the rally with a kill and combination block for the 29-27 victory.
The beginning for the third set saw Wofford score seven of the first 10 points to go ahead 7-3. Furman then used a 7-4 run to cut its deficit down to 11-10 following a Terrier attack error. Wofford broke the set open courtesy of a 10-3 run and increased its lead out to 21-13 after a kill from MacLean. The Paladins staged a late rally and got to within two, 23-21, off a Terrier ball handling error. Wofford scored the next two points and won 25-21.
The Terriers jumped out to an early 10-point lead in the fourth set after an 11-1 run was capped by a Furman attack error. The Paladins got to within six points a total of six times with the last coming at 21-15 on Tanner's kill. Wofford recorded the last four points to win the set, 25-15, and capture the match, 3-1.
Watkins led Furman with four blocks (one solo, three assisted) and Tolone contributed three assisted. Harris provided two assisted blocks, and Chandler and Tanner one apiece.
The Paladins held a 60-49 advantage in digs for the match. The contest featured 12 ties and eight lead changes.
