GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman Paladins hit to the road again for a Southern Conference football clash against Western Carolina this Saturday in Cullowhee, N.C. Kickoff for the ESPN3Â live streamed event at E.J. Whitmire Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.
The contest will also be aired over Furman flagship ESPN Upstate and its four powerhouse stations: 97.7 FM/1330 AM in Greenville, and 97.1 FM/950 AM in Spartanburg. Â The broadcast can be accessed via Audacy.com, as well as through FurmanPaladins.com.
Fans may also follow the action through Western Carolina's Sidearm live stats, accessible via FurmanPaladins.com, and get timely updates on twitter @PaladinFootball.
Coming off a 13-3 loss at Chattanooga on Saturday, Furman (4-4, 2-3 SoCon), which has dropped its last two outings, faces a Western Carolina (2-6, 2-3 SoCon) squad that has manhandled its last two foes, The Citadel (45-31) and Wofford (41-21), on the road in impressive fashion. Â
The Paladins will look to continue their success in Cullowhee, where they've won six of the last seven clashes with the Catamounts and are 16-6-1 all-time — tops versus all current SoCon foes.  In 2019 Furman claimed a 28-7 verdict on WCU's home turf behind a strong rushing attack (296 yards) headlined by
Devin Wynn's 87-yard, two-touchdown performance. Â Furman posted a 35-7 win over Western Carolina in Greenville during the spring season, behind a 207-yard, three-touchdown passing performance by
Hamp Sisson. Â The Paladins also rushed for 320 yards in the victory, their fifth straight over the Catamounts, getting 106 yards and a touchdown from Wynn.
To extend their run of success in Cullowhee, the Paladins are going to need to find some offense, a component that was missing last week versus Chattanooga when Furman managed only 157 total yards — the program's lowest output since the 1997 season.  The three points marked the second time this year the Paladins failed to score a touchdown against a SoCon foe, something that last happened in 1974.
Furman, which ranks last in the SoCon in scoring offense (18.4 ppg) and total offense (320.6 ypg), and next to last in rushing offense (143.5 ypg), is the only league team that has yet to reach double figure rushing touchdowns (9).
All-Southern Conference running back
Devin Wynn, who has run for 2,945 yards and 29 touchdowns in his career, has missed two of the last three games due to injury, and his status for Saturday is unclear. Â Regardless of whether he sees action the Paladins will look for production from other veteran runners, including redshirt sophomores
Wayne Anderson, Jr.,
Devin Abrams, and
Dominic Roberto.
One of the few bright spots offensively has been All-America tight end
Ryan Miller, who has 30 receptions for 547 yards and four touchdowns.
Furman's defense has kept the Paladins in virtually every game this fall, and it's been due primarily to an exeperienced front. Â The Paladins' depth, which took a hit after tackle
Matt Sochovka suffered a season ending knee injury in the 29-18, season opening win over North Carolina A&T, suffered another blow against Chattanooga when outstanding true freshman tackle
Bryce Stanfield, who had notched three sacks in the previous two contests, went down with a foot injury that will sideline him the rest of th way. Â Still, Furman will compete behind a proven trio that includes nose guard
Cameron Coleman, tackle
London Lewis, and bandit
Adrian Hope (25.5 career sacks).
The Paladin secondary will face a quality Western Carolina passing attack that is averaging 290.8 yards per game under first year head coach Kerwin Bell. Â Looking to counter the Catamounts' assault is a unit paced by junior cornerback
Travis Blackshear, who recorded his fifth interception of the season against Chattanooga.Â
