Furman Shoots Past Wofford in SoCon Quarterfinals, 3-1

Paladins to Face No. 2 Seed Mercer Sunday in Semifinals

Macon, Ga. – Alfredo Diaz-Santillan had a goal and two assists on Friday evening to lead the No. 3 seed Furman men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the No. 6 seed Wofford Terriers in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Men's Soccer Championship from Mercer's Betts Stadium.

Furman, who extended its winning streak to four games, improves to 7-8-1 on the year while Wofford's season ends at 5-11-1 overall.

Diaz-Santillan set new career highs with four points and two assists in the victory. First team All-SoCon Jake Raine and second team All-SoCon Miles Fenton each contributed a goal while Jacob Garzon and SoCon All-Freshman Team performer Ivan Agyaakwah added one assist apiece. In goal, Ben Roberts finished with four saves.

Nic Parker scored the lone goal for the Terriers and goalkeeper Joshua Old finished with five saves.

Diaz-Santillan helped get the scoring started for the Paladins in the 10th minute earning his first assist of the contest on Fenton's goal, his second of the season, giving them a 1-0 lead. Sam Miller laid a cross into the 18-yard box and Old came out to gain possession but lost the ball in the process. Diaz-Santillan collected the rebound and made a pass back to Fenton. Fenton's attempt from 20 yards away went over the Wofford defense into an empty net.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, Furman quickly came out in the second half and extended its lead to two goals three minutes into the period. Diaz-Santillan recorded his second goal of the season with Garzon and Agyaakwah getting credit for the assist. Agyaakwah left a through ball past the Terrier defense to Garzon inside the 18-yard box. Garzon immediately turned and made a pass into the middle of the box where Diaz-Santillan scored inside the right post between three players.

Raine extended his scoring streak to seven consecutive games in the 56th minute on his team-leading 12th goal of the year. Diaz-Santillan picked up his second assist of the contest. The Paladins were granted a corner kick near side and Miller took the attempt placing the ball near the six-yard box. Diaz-Santillan's header was deflected by Old but Raine's header off the rebound found the back of the next to give Furman a 3-0 advantage.

Parker got Wofford on the board in the 80th minute scoring unassisted and put the final score at 3-1.

The Paladins held a 14-11 advantage in shots and 8-5 in attempts on goal. Furman also led 6-2 in corner kicks.
