UNCG Outlasts Furman, 3-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Brittany Wood hit .375 with 20 kills as UNC Greensboro outlasted Furman, 3-1 (21-25, 25-9, 25-16, 25-23), Friday night at Fleming Gymnasium in Greensboro, N.C.

The Paladins fall to 7-16 overall and 2-11 in SoCon play, while the Spartans improve to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in SoCon play.

Freshman Chandler Parker hit .438 with eight kills to pace Furman, while freshman Bella Tolone also recorded eight kills and tallied 15 digs in the contest.  Sophomore Ella Abraham recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 15 assists and 12 digs, while junior Andrea Aceveda added 15 digs.  Junior Sarah Turner notched a team-high 17 assists. 

For the Spartans, Mandy Garvens posted a team-high 50 assists, and Jenna Wiggs added 26 digs.

In set one, Furman jumped out to an early 7-4 lead off kills by senior Neci Harris and sophomore Sydney Tanner, before UNCG tied the match at 8-all.  The teams remained tied at 11-11, then the Paladins went on an 8-2 run, fueled by kills from Parker and a service ace from Turner, to lead, 19-13.  The Spartans kept Furman within three points at 20-17, but consecutive kills from sophomore Myra Mrus, Tolone, and Tanner, coupled with a service ace by Mrus, gave Furman set point at 24-17.  The Paladins won the set, 25-21, on a service error by UNCG.

After UNCG took the second set, 25-9, to tie the match, the teams battled through seven ties to settle at 10-10 in set three.  The Spartans won three-straight points to lead, 13-10, but the Paladins won four of the next five points off kills by Parker and sophomore Kelsey Watkins to tie the match again at 14-apiece.  UNCG then put together an 11-2 run to end the set, taking a 25-16 victory.

Furman took a 5-1 lead to start set four and extended the lead to 10-6 off kills by Tanner and Watkins.  The Paladins capitalized off consecutive attack errors by the Spartans to maintain a four-point lead, 15-11, before UNCG's 6-1 run gave the Spartans a 17-16 advantage.  Furman then reeled off four-straight points off a kill and service ace from Tolone and a kill from freshman Ava Augustson to lead, 20-17.  UNCG tied the match at 20-all, but the Paladins again took advantage of attack errors to build a 22-20 lead before the Spartans won five of the next six points to win the set, 25-23.

The Paladins will take on Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., Saturday at 7 p.m.
