Birmingham, Ala. – Mary Raymond scored twice and Alyssa Frazier had two assists to lead the No. 1 seed Samford Bulldogs to a 4-2 victory over the No. 2 seed Furman Paladins on Sunday afternoon in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship game from Shauna Yelton Field.
Furman's season ends at 12-6-1 overall while Samford improved to 15-3-2.
Jasmine Greene and
Hannah Farr both led the Paladins with one goal apiece, while
Lauren O'Hearn and
Nieva Gaither each dished out an assist. Goalkeeper
Addison Corn grabbed seven saves.
Frazier concluded the game with two assists and a goal for the Bulldogs while Raymond contributed the two goals. Ella Simpson had one goal and Taylor Yount registered an assist. In goal, Morgan McAslan recorded five saves.
Raymond's first goal of the contest gave Samford an early 1-0 lead in the 7
th minute with Frazier getting credit for the assist following a corner kick.
Furman responded with two goals in 10 minutes late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead at intermission.
The Paladins' first shot of the contest led to the game-tying goal when Farr scored her fourth goal of the season off a corner kick from O'Hearn, who collected her first assist. Greene's sixth goal this year in the 36
th minute would give Furman a 2-1 advantage after Gaither tallied her sixth assist. Greene received a pass from Gaither and scored on a one-on-one opportunity against McAslan.
Raymond quickly tied the game at 2-2 for the Bulldogs less than a minute into the second half off the assist from Yount.
Samford added goals from Simpson in the 57
th minute and Frazier in the 63
rd minute to secure the 4-2 victory. Frazier picked the assist on Simpson's goal.
The Bulldogs held a 15-12 advantage in shots and 11-7 in attempts on goal. Samford also led 6-5 in corner kicks.
Gaither and
Isabella Gutierrez led the Paladins with three shots and two attempts on goal apiece.
Raymond had a team-high three shots, with each going on goal, for Samford.
