RADFORD, VA. -- Bryonna McClean scored 13 points and fueled a late 11-0 run to power Radford past Furman, 73-61, in women's basketball action Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center.
Radford improves to 4-3 on the season, while Furman falls to 5-3 with the loss.
Grace van Rij scored a game and career high 19 points and backed it up with 11 rebounds, another career best, to pace the Paladins.
After
Tierra Hodges' driving layup with 3:21 to go pulled Furman to within 62-61, the Highlanders scored the game's final 11 points, seven of which came from McClean. Â The senior guard drained a 3-pointer at the 2:23 mark put Radford up 67-61, and she followed that with a layup and a pair of free throws to stretch the advantage to 71-61, sealing the outcome.
Until its late surge, Radford's biggest lead in the contest was eight points, 59-51, which Furman all but erased with an 10-3 spurt that pulled the Paladins to within 62-61 on Hodges' layup.
Furman's took its last lead in the final minute of the third quarter on a pair of
Jada Session free throws that put the Paladins up, 51-49, but Radford answered on the ensuing possession with a Carmen Williams 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to go ahead for good, 52-51.
van Rij's career high scoring performance came on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 free throws.
Hodges connected on 7-of-17 shots, including 2-of-4 3-pointers, for her 18 points. Â Hodges led all rebounders with 13 caroms to complete her fourth double-double of the season. Â The 18 points moved Hodges from 17th to 15th on Furman's career scoring ledger with 1,231 points, tying her with Lauren Reed (1982-85).
Tate Walters contributed 13 points for the Paladins, who shot just 34.8 percent from the field (23x66) and only 3-of-19 from 3-point range.
Radford, meanwhile, shot 47.6 percent from the field (30x63). Â The shooting differential helped the Highlanders nullify Frman's 49-34 rebounding advantage. Â The Paladins also committed 16 turnovers to Radford's eight.
