Hodges Double-Double Leads Furman Past S.C. State, 47-32

Senior Forward Moves Into Second Place On Furman's Career Rebounding Chart

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Tierra Hodges scored 15 points and claimed 14 rebounds to power Furman past South Carolina State, 47-32, in women's basketball play Wednesday evening at the Smith-Hamilton-Middleton Arena.

Hodges converted 7-of-20 shots and notched her Southern Conference leading eighth double-double of the season with 14 rebounds to help Furman (7-7) wrap up a five-game December road stretch heading into the new year  The Covington, Ga., native also added four steals and a block in 39 minutes of action.

Hodges' 14 caroms upped her career tally to 1,062, moving her into second place all-time at Furman, ahead of her coach Jackie (Smith) Carson, who claimed 1,058 rebounds in her brilliant Paladin career.

Tate Walters followed with 12 points, and Grace van Rij combined eight points with eight rebounds for Furman.

Trinity Klock paced S.C. State (0-14) with 11 points.

The Paladins led 27-22 late in the third quarter when Hodges converted a jump shot and Walters followed a Hodges block by putting down a fast break layup to give Furman a 31-22 advantage with 1:33 to go in the period.

A Hodges layup a minute later gave Furman a 34-24 lead, and the Paladins were never threatened over the game's final 10 minutes.

Furman, which entered the game ranked third nationally in offensive rebounding, used a 16-5 advantage on the offensive glass and solid defense, which forced 25 South Carolina State turnovers, to rack up 25 more shots (66-41) than the Bulldogs.

The Paladins open 2022 with a New Year's Day clash with Southern Wesleyan at Timmons Arena.  Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
