KENNESAW, GA. -- Amani Johnson drained a game-tying, 3-pointer in the final second of regulation to force overtime, and Kennesaw State cruised past Furman in the extra period to earn a 70-59 victory in women's basketball action Monday evening at KSU's Convocation Center.
The loss was the third straight for Furman (5-5), while Kennesaw State (3-6) halted a three-game slide with the victory.
Trailing 57-54 as time wound down and following a held ball with seven seconds remaining that allowed the Owls' to retain possession, KSU's Gabi Legister fired a pass to the right right wing, where an open Johnson collected the pass and let fly wih a 3-pointer that knotted the game at 57-57 with less than a second on the clock.
Furman's attempt on the other end of the court following a timeout didn't come close.
Kennesaw owned the overtime period, outscoring Furman 13-2 to secure the victory.
Alexis Poole paced Kennesaw State with 19 points, and Johnson, who converted just 2-of-9 treys, finished with 14.
The Paladins were paced by
Tate Walters with 19 points.
Tierra Hodges and
Kate Johnson rounded out Furman's double figure scoring effort with 12 points apiece.
Furman led 41-31 after three quarters, but the Owls wasted little time in carving up the Paladins' advantage, opening the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to make it a 41-39 game following a Stacie Jones layup at the 8:26 mark of the period.Â
Jones pulled KSU even at 46-46 with 4:32 to go, and the Owls took their first lead of the second half, 48-46, on a pair of free throws by Poole with just under four minutes remaining.
Grace van Rij's layup with 33 second left gave Furman a 55-44 lead, and following a Owl missed jumper, Hodges was fouled on the rebound and sent to the free throw line, where she drained both chances to put the Paladins up 57-54 with 21 seconds on the clock.
The game featured a combined 45 turnovers, inluding 25 by Furman. Â The Paladins made just 19-of-62 shots (30.6 percent), including 3-of-18 from 3-point range. Â The Owls weren't much better, connecting on 33.9 percent from the field (21x62).
Furman plays at Georgia Tech on Sunday.
