Furman Comeback Comes Up Short At UNCG, 62-56

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNC Greensboro used a decisive 7-0 fourth quarter spurt to blunt a Furman comeback and hold on for a 62-56 victory over the visiting Paladins in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.

The two teams play again Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Furman (7-12, 3-7 SoCon) trailed 32-20 at halftime but roared back in the third quarter behind senior Celena Taborn, who contributed 11 points in the period, including the Paladins final six points from the free throw line, to give Furman its first lead of the contest, 44-43, heading to the fourth period.

With UNCG holding a 48-46 lead, the Spartans' Khalis Cain sparked UNCG's 7-0 run with a stickback off an offensive rebound with 6:36 to go and finished off the spurt with a basket at the 3:43 mark to put UNCG up, 55-46.

Furman trimmed UNCG's lead to four points three times down the stretch but could get no closer.

Taborn led all scorers with 17 points and added nine rebounds.

Sydney James contributed 10 points for the Paladins, who converted just 20-of-60 shot attempts (33.3%), including only 5-of-26 from 3-point range.

The Spartans placed three players in double figures, led by Cece Crudup's 12 points.

UNCG shot considerably better, making 26-of-53 shots (49.1%), which helped overome Furman's 45-31 rebounding advantage.

Tierra Hodges, the SoCon's leading rebounder, claimed a game high 11 caroms, which she combined with eight points.
