Men's Soccer Tops UNC Asheville In Exhibition Action, 2-0

McLagan, Singletary Net Goals For the Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Senior Cole McLagan scored from the penalty spot just 63 seconds into the match and junior Garrett Singletary netted a second half goal as Furman claimed a 2-0 victory over UNC Asheville in exhibition men's soccer action on a soggy Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

"We're just happy to be able to get out and play a full 90 minutes again and get the win," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "Asheville is a quality team and they're tough to play against. I'm really happy to see Cole and Garrett score, and glad to get a lot of playing time for a lot of guys today."

Just over a minute into the match, Dylan Lane raced down the right flank and was taken down inside the box. McLagan, who led Furman in goals a year ago, stepped to the penalty spot and fired past Asheville goalkeeper Leon Musial to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead at the 1:03 mark.

Furman dominated the play for most of the afternoon, compiling a 13-1 advantage in total shots and 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Paladins earned four corner kicks and surrendered just one to the visitors.

In the 65th minute, Shaun-Chris Joash received the ball on the right side of the box and drove a shot towards goal that Musial deflected into the path of Singletary. The substitute, who entered the match just minutes before, deposited his shot into an empty net at 64:54 to double the Furman lead.

Musial finished with four saves in over 76 minutes of action for Asheville, while Furman starter Ben Hale stopped the only shot he faced on the afternoon.

The Paladins open the regular season on Sunday, February 21, at 6 p.m. when they host the South Carolina Gamecocks on Seagraves Field. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live statistics will be available through StatBroadcast. Links will be posted at FurmanPaladins.com.
