Furman Drops 14-10 Road Decision at Davidson

LaMotte Scores Career-High Six Goals, Demis Adds Five Assists

Davidson, N.C. – Gianna New scored five goals and Olivia Carey added four assists to lead the Davidson Wildcats to a 14-10 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon from Richardson Stadium.

Furman drops to 0-2 overall while Davidson improves to 1-1 on the season.

Kyra LaMotte led the Paladins offensively after scoring a career-high six goals while Hannah Demis contributed five assists. Sydney Catts, Lauren Farber, Sydney McClure and Lindsey Kelly all registered one goal. Meghan Deehan picked up four ground balls and three different players won two draws each.

The six goals scored by LaMotte and five assists from Demis are both tied for third-most in a game, respectively, in program history.

New tallied a match-high five goals and 12 draws to lead the Wildcats on offense, and Katie Woodruff, Erin Cooke and Julianne Carey posted two goals apiece. Jane Digregorio collected three assists. Noelle Cegielski had a team-high seven ground balls.

In goal, Deehan grabbed eight saves while Amanda Monahan had one for Davidson.

The Wildcats opened the game on a 5-1 run over the first 9:50 and took a four-goal lead with 20:10 left in the first half. Furman responded with three consecutive goals and trailed 5-4 at the 15:34 mark. LaMotte got the scoring started for the Paladins while Farber and McClure followed with free position goals. Davidson would then go on another 5-1 run and held a 10-5 advantage with one-minute left before intermission. LaMotte's goal with 38 seconds left sent Furman into halftime down 10-6.

The teams combined for just eight goals in the second half with the Wildcats scoring three of the first four to go ahead 13-7 with 22:41 to go. The Paladins would get to within four, 13-9, 11 minutes later courtesy of goals by Kelly and LaMotte. The teams traded a pair of goals over the final six minutes of the contest. Catts' goal with 4:09 remaining put the final score at 14-10.

Furman concluded the game with 18 ground balls and went 3-for-5 in free position attempts. The Paladins also forced Davidson into 23 turnovers.

Furman hosts Liberty in its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. from Paladin Stadium.
