GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 24 Furman blanked Presbyterian, 7-0, Thursday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins have won five out of their last six matches, including victories over Alabama, 16th-ranked Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.
The Paladins swept the double matches to take the first point. Junior Madison Dillon and senior MaryAnn Rompf beat Samantha Calais and Alexa Wilson, 6-2, in the top-seeded contest, and sophomore Maggie Pate and freshman Ellie Schoppe teamed up for a 6-1 victory over Beth Lacey and Zeba Jamal at flight two. In the number three match, sophomore Eva Borders and junior Julia Adams topped Jessica Leeman and Lucianna Piedra, 6-3.
In singles, Furman won all six matches in straight sets. Adams blew past Calais, 6-1, 6-0, at number one, and Rompf downed Jamal, 6-4, 6-2, at flight two. At number three, Dillon blanked Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, and at flight four, Pate recorded a 6-1, 6-4 advantage over Leeman. Schoppe defeated Piedra, 6-0, 6-2, at number five, and freshman Ilayda Baykan entered the lineup at flight six, where she scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Lacey.
Furman (6-5) opens the Southern Conference season Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the Paladins entertain Western Carolina at the Mickel Tennis Center. Presbyterian falls to 1-4 with the loss.
