Furman Splits First Two Games of Winthrop Invitational

Paladins Face Stony Brook, Winthrop on Sunday

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Furman softball team began play at the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday splitting a pair of games against the Bowling Green Falcons and Stony Brook Seawolves at Winthrop's Terry Field.

Furman (1-3) defeated Bowling Green 10-3 in game one before falling 9-4 to Stony Brook in the finale.

Game 1
Eight different Paladins collected one hit apiece against the Falcons while Ashlee Lykins drove in three in the seven-run victory. Riley Ludlam recorded two RBI and Mariah Bohl scored three runs. Emily Bartlett, Claire Ginder, Marina Griffin and Amanda Fleming each had one RBI.

Logan Everett compiled two hits and two RBI to lead Bowling Green. Madi McCoy finished with two hits and one RBI.

In the circle, Bailey Tanner (1-1) earned the win after combining for 4.1 scoreless innings on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Madison French took the loss surrendering four runs on four hits, one walk and one strikeout in two innings of work.

Furman scored in each of the first three innings and built a 7-0 lead heading to the fourth. Ludlam got the scoring started for the Paladins in the top of the first with her RBI triple and later came home on Bartlett's RBI double. Fleming and Ludlam each drove in a run in the second while Lykins highlighted the third bringing home three with her single.

The Falcons made it a 7-2 contest in the fourth following a two RBI single by Everett.

Furman responded with a three-run fifth inning that started on a leadoff solo homer to right field by Ginder. Griffin and Lykins also plated a run with a single and sacrifice fly to put the Paladins in front 10-2.

Bowling Green added a single run in the bottom-half of the fifth on McCoy's RBI single.

Game 2
Nicole McCarvill went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Seawolves to a 9-4 victory over Furman.

Lykins posted two hits in four plate appearances and an RBI while Maria Bohl had a game-high three RBI.

Lindsey Osmer and Corinne Badger both registered a team-high two RBI along with McCarvill.

Melissa Rahrich tossed a complete game for Stony Brook giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts. Shelby Basso (0-2) suffered the loss also throwing a complete game allowing nine runs (six earned) on 13 hits, two walks and one strikeout.

The Seawolves plated three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead on RBI's from Brooke Dye and Shauna Nuss.

The Paladins responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth when Bohl tied the game at 3-3 following her home run to left field.

Stony Brook broke the game open scoring six consecutive runs including two in the fifth and four in the seventh to lead 9-3. Osmer was responsible for both runs in the top of the fifth on her two RBI single. The Seawolves received a pair of two-run homers in the seventh from Badger and McCarvill.

Lykins made the score 9-4 in the bottom of the seventh with her RBI single to right field that scored Chrissy Flemming.

Furman closes out the Winthrop Invitational on Sunday facing Stony Brook at 10 a.m. and Winthrop at 12 p.m.
