Furman Soccer Tops USC Upstate In First Road Test, 2-0

Joash Nets A Goal, Adds An Assist For Paladins

Spartanburg, S.C. – Sophomore Shaun-Chris Joash scored in the 41st minute and assisted on Jake Raine's 51stminute goal to propel Furman past USC Upstate, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday evening at County University Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.

Joash put the Paladins in front at the 40:13 mark as Sam Miller fed a pass to the Hampton Hill, England, native in the box and he snuck a low shot past the keeper to break the deadlock. Less than six minutes after the restart, Joash picked out Raine in the box and the freshman found the top-netting for his second goal of the campaign.

Redshirt-senior Ben Hale notched four saves to post his second shutout in as many matches this season for the Paladins. Felipe Baeza turned away two shots in a losing effort for USC Upstate.

USC Upstate (1-2-0) held a 10-8 edge in total shot attempts, while shots on goal were even at 4-4. The Paladins earned seven corner kicks to the Spartans' four.

Furman (2-0-0) returns to action on Wednesday, March 3, when its travels to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, N.C.
