Furman Downs Wofford In Regular Season Finale, 58-52

Paladins Win Third Straight, Improve To 28-0 All-Time Versus Wofford In Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sydney James tallied 14 points to lead four double figure scorers and help Furman take down Wofford, 58-52, in Southern Conference women's basketball regular season finale action for both teams Thursday evening at Timmons Arena.

The victory, the third straight for Furman (10-13, 6-8 SoCon), improved the Paladins to 28-0 all-time versus Wofford (11-10, 7-6 SoCon) in Greenville.

James, who entered the contest as the SoCon's top scoring freshman (10.2 ppg), connected on 6-of-10 field goal attempts, including 2-of-3 3-pointers to pace Furman, which shot 50.0 percent (23-of-46), its second best performance of the season from the field.

Seniors Celena Taborn and Tierra Hodges, playing in the final home game of their careers, followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively, and freshman guard Tate Walters rounded out the double figure scoring parade with 10 points.

Hodges' 13 rebounds was a game high and earned the 5-foot-9 All-SoCon forward her league leading 13th double-double of the season.  Walters also fashioned a double-double, combining her 10-point performance with 11 assists, the second highest tally of the season for the Buford, Ga., product.

Wofford got 11 points apiece from Annabelle Schultz and Helen Matthews.

The Terriers shot only 27.1 percent from the field (16-of-59) but used an 18-10 offensive rebounding advantage to forge a 23-8 differential in second chance points.  Wofford also converted 19 Furman turnovers into 20 points to help stay in the contest.

After forging a 16-2 lead after one period, Furman built on a 27-17 halftime advantage by jumping on Wofford over the first five minutes of the second half, outscoring the Terriers 15-4 to go up 42-21 following a layup by James at the 5:18 mark of the third quarter.

A Hodges basket off a Walters assist a minute later kept Furman's lead at 21 points (44-23) and seemingly put the Paladins in control.

Wofford, however, answered the challenge with 13-0 run to end the period, cutting Furman's lead to 44-36 on the strength of three 3-pointers, including two by Schultz and one by Matthews, over the final 1:54.

Furman maintained the lead in the fourth quarter, but it got dicey late when Schultz followed up a Paladin turnover with a jump shot to get the Terriers to within 54-50 with 2:23 remaining.

Wofford failed to convert its next three shot attempts, and the Paladins, who attempted six of their nine free throws in the contest in the final 11 seconds, saw Taborn drain one of two attempts with six seconds on the clock to make it 56-52.

Furman opens 2021 Southern Conference Tournament play in Asheville, N.C., at Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville on Thursday, March 4.  The Paladins will take either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed into tournament play depending on the result of Friday's UNCG vs. Western Carolina game.  A Western Carolina win over UNCG would give Furman a No. 5 seed and a 2:15 p.m. first round encounter against No. 4 Wofford.  A UNCG victory over WCU would earn the Spartans the No. 5 seed by virtue of UNCG's regular season sweep of Furman, sending the No. 6 seed Paladins into a 6:45 matchup versus No. 3 seed Chattanooga.
