Taborn, Hodges Help Furman Scuttle ETSU, 55-46

Paladins Sweep Weekend Series

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Tierra Hodges and Celena Taborn scored 14 points apiece and Furman used a strong second half start to pull away from East Tennessee State en route to a 55-46 victory in Southern Conference women's basketball play Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

The victory earned Furman (8-11, 3-6 SoCon) the two-game weekend series sweep of ETSU (3-11, 1-6 SoCon) and stretched the Paladins' winning streak over the Buccaneers to five games.

Playing a season high 30 minutes, Taborn, a 6-foot-3 senior and Furman's career field goal percentage leader (62.2%), converted all seven of her shots to headline the Paladins' attack.  Hodges, a redshirt senior who in Friday's 58-46 triumph over ETSU became the 26th player in Furman history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, matched Taborn with 14 points while also contributing a team high seven rebounds.

Freshman Sydney James rounded out Furman's double figure scoring trio with 10 points

Tyah Hunter racked up a career high eight assists and collected five steals.

Leading 27-22 at intermission, Furman wasted no time in taking full control of the contest by opening the second half with a 9-0 run, fueled by James' three baskets, including a pair of fast break layups, and a Greyson Boone 3-pointer that stretched the Paladin advantage to 36-22.

ETSU cut the lead to 40-32 on a 3-pointer by Carly Hooks, but Furman blunted the run with a James free throw and Hodges three-point play to close the period up, 44-32.

The Paladins finished the contest shooting 44.9 percent (22x49) while ETSU struggled to a 36.5 percent effort from the field (19x52).  The Buccaneers suffered 26 turnovers, which Furman turned into a 22-11 scoring advantage off the miscues.

Furman returns to action next Thursday when it opens a two-game series at UNCG, with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
