Greenville, S.C. – Junior
Isabella Gutierrez scored two goals in the opening nine minutes and Furman cruised to a 5-0 victory over Anderson in exhibition women's soccer action on Tuesday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Less than four minutes into the match, Gutierrez took a
Nieva Gaither pass on the left side of the box and lined a shot past Anderson goalkeeper Madison Paige to open the scoring. At the 8:55 mark,
Ellie Laxer's corner kick was deflected into the path of Gutierrez who punched home her second goal of the night to double the Furman lead.
The Paladins struck for three more goals in the second half.
Julia Nicholas won a battle for a ball along the Anderson back line before slotting her shot past the keeper at 55:24 to up the margin to 3-0. In the 67
th minute,
MG Farr pounced on her own rebound to put away her second chance and
Erin Houlihan capped the scoring with a breakaway score in the 70
th minute.
"It was great to be back on the field and competing against someone else tonight," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "We saw some good things, scored a few nice goals and got the chance to see a lot of people play. We'll learn from the experience and look to just keep getting better ahead of the Southern Conference season."
Goalkeepers
Addison Corn and
Nora Sampson combined on the shutout with Sampson notching the Paladins' lone save. Paige totaled 10 saves in 72 minutes of action for the Trojans.
The Paladins posted a 30-3 edge in shot attempts and earned six corner kicks.
Furman returns to action on Saturday, February 20, with an exhibition contest at Clemson before opening the regular season at home versus North Greenville on Sunday, February 28.
