Furman (2-1, 2-1 SoCon) is coming off a 44-37 overtime win against Samford on Saturday at Paladin Stadium, a game that saw head coach
Clay Hendrix's squad erase a 17-point second quarter deficit to notch the largest comeback in Paladin Stadium's 236-game history. Â
Two
Hamp Sisson fourth quarter touchdown passes, including a 73-yard strike to tight end
Ryan Miller with 2:39 remaining, tied the game at 37-37. Â In the extra period All-SoCon tailback
Devin Wynn's nine-yard touchdown run gave Furman the lead, and it proved to the difference after cornerback
Cally Chizik recovered a Bulldog fumble at the 2-yard line to end the contest.
Miller, who caught three passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns in the game, and who has four touchdown catches among his eight catches this spring, was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week while Sisson collected league student-athlete of the week accolades. Â
Timmy Bleekrode also joined the awards parade by landing SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week laurels after converting all three field goal attempts and five PATs, and averaging 47.2 yards on five punts.
Though still looking for more overall offensive consistency, Furman has compiled impressive statistical numbers thru three games, averaging 30.7 points and 472.0 yards per game while running 257 plays to the opposition's 153 — a differential that is reflected in an eye-popping 38:02 to 21:58 spread in time of possession.
Paladin defensive statistics are equally solid as Furman is yielding only 261.0 yards per game, including just 80.3 yards per game on the ground thus far.
Furman's ground game is headed up by Wynn, a senior All-SoCon performer, who has tallied 306 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Joining Miller in putting up solid receiving numbers is senior wide out
Ryan DeLuca, who came up big in the Paladins' second half rally against Samford that included a 31-yard touchdown catch. Â The Fort Mill, S.C., leads the squad with 13 receptions for 285 yards (21.9 ypc).
Redshirt freshman linebacker
Nick Kuzemka tops the tackle chart with 21 stops, and senior cornerback Dairus Kearse follows with 14 tackles and both Paladin interceptions.
East Tennessee (1-0, 1-0 SoCon) opened its season on Feb. 20 with a 24-17 home victory over Samford, but the Bucs had their Mar. 6 contest against Wofford canceled by the Terriers due to a failure to meet squad size minimum requirements.
Furman's last visit to Johnson City in 2018 was not a pleasant experience as the Paladins watched a 27-6 second half lead slip away in an eventual 29-27 loss to the Bucs. Â Furman gained a measure of revenge in 2019 by edging ETSU, 17-10, at Paladin Stadium.
The Paladins lead the all-time series, 26-8, and are 10-6 in games played in Johnson City.
