Greenville, S.C. – Furman's offense exploded for 26 runs over 12 innings in a 10-2, 16-0 doubleheader sweep of the North Carolina A&T Aggies Wednesday afternoon at the Aggies Softball Complex in Greensboro, N.C.
Game 1: Furman 10, North Carolina A&T 2
Sierra Tufts tossed four shutout innings of relief and
Mackense Greico belted a pair of homers to lead Furman to a 10-2 victory in game one.
After Greico worked a leadoff walk in the top of the second inning, freshman
Kaitlyn Laudick lanched her first collegiate homer to give the Paladins a 2-0 lead. Three consecutive singles by
Chloe Fabio,
Emily Bartlett and
Riley Ludlam to start the top of the third gave Furman a 3-0 lead. A double steal pushed the margin to 4-0 before Greico cracked her first home of the afternoon, a two-run shot, to put Furman ahead 6-0.
With Furman leading 7-2 after four innings, Ludlam and Greico hammered back-to-back home runs to start the fifth and extended the Paladins' lead to 9-2. After Greico doubled to open the top of the seventh, pinch runner
Marina Griffin scored on
Natalie Morgan's RBI single up the middle to conclude the scoring.
Tufts improved to 2-3 in the circle after scattering two hits over four innings in relief of starter
Bailey Tanner. She walked two batters and notched a pair of strikeouts.
Greico went 3-for-3 with three extra base hits and three RBI, while Fabio and Ludlam each collected two hits in the Paladin victory.
North Carolina A&T starter Kiara Richards took the loss after allowing six runs in just two and one-third innings in the circle.
Game 2: Furman 16, North Carolina A&T 0
The Paladins removed all doubt in the top of the second inning in game two as they sent 14 batters to the plate and tallied eight runs against two Aggie pitchers en route to a 16-0 win and series sweep.
Laudick notched a pair of hits in the eight-run frame and
Ashlee Lykins laced a two-run single to center field to highlight the rally. Furman scored its first of five runs in the top of the third on a wild pitch before Ludlam lined an RBI double to the opposite field, Greico delivered a two-run single and Laudick doubled to plate pinch runner
Hana Hashioka.
Tufts (3-3) hurled three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit to earn her second victory of the day, while Tanner surrendered just one hit in two scoreless innings of work.
Lykins, Ludlam and Laudick all finished with three hits apiece, including a double. The trio combined to drive in eight runs and score seven for the Paladins, who posted their largest offensive output since scoring a 20-5 win at Gardner-Webb in April of 2017.
Greico, who singled in her finale plate appearance in Sunday's loss at Charlotte, reached base safely in all seven trips on Wednesday to run her streak of reaching base to eight consecutive plate appearances. She recorded two singles, a double, two home runs and two bases on balls against the Aggies.
Stinson allowed eight runs over one and two-thirds innings of work to absorb the loss for the Aggies (0-16).
Furman (4-8) continues its road trip this weekend with a three-game series at No. 25 Clemson. The Paladins and Tigers will play a single game on Friday at 5 p.m. with a Saturday doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. All three games at McWhorter Stadium will be streamed on the ACC Network Xtra.
