Clemson, S.C. – The 25
th-ranked Clemson Tigers plated eight runs on 10 hits, highlighted by a four-run bottom of the fifth, to down Furman, 8-0, in the opening game of a three-game weekend series on Friday night at McWhorter Stadium in Clemson, S.C.
Scoreless after two-and-a-half innings, Clemson took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Ansley Gilstrap worked a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on a single by Marissa Guimbarda to put the Tigers in front 1-0. Abi Stuart followed with a double to plate pinch runner Carlee Shannon to increase the margin to 2-0.
After Valerie Cagle opened the bottom of the fifth with a walk, Guimbarda and Stuart did damage again with back-to-back doubles to give Clemson a 4-0 lead. A sacrifice fly from Kyah Keller and an RBI single down the line off the bat of Casey Bigham widened the Tigers' lead to 6-0.
The Paladins put two runners on base with singles by
Mariah Bohl and
Natalie Morgan in the top of the sixth, but the threat was erased when
Emily Bartlett lined into a double play. Clemson triggered the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom of the frame as Gilstrap reached on a single and Guimbarda launched a two-run homer two batters later for the 8-0 final margin.
Guimbarda, who opened her career at Furman and earned Southern Conference Player of the Year honors in 2019, went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI to lead Clemson. Stuart finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI for the Tigers.
Valerie Cagle tossed six scoreless innings to improve to 9-1 in the circle. She limited Furman to three hits and walked just one batter while fanning four.
Freshman
Sierra Tufts (3-4) suffered the loss for the Paladins after allowing two runs on four hits over three and one-third innings in the circle. Tufts issued two walks and struck out two Tigers. Morgan went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Paladins.
