First Place Furman Shuts Down Chattanooga, 2-0; Burr Earns Record 100th SoCon Victory

Paladins Host Second Place Samford On Sunday At 2 P.M.

Greenville, S.C. – Kyndal Anderson and Jasmine Greene each netted a goal and freshman Addison Corn notched her first career shutout as Furman downed Chattanooga, 2-0, Friday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium to maintain its lead atop the Southern Conference women's soccer standings.

The victory improved the Paladins to 5-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league play, while the Mocs slipped to 3-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference after suffering their first loss of the season. Furman's win also marked the 100th career SoCon victory for Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, now in his 16th season at the helm of Furman's program. Burr, who sports a 206-89-23 overall record, became the first SoCon coach in league history to reach 100 career conference victories.

"I'm proud of our team for getting the result tonight," said Burr, who has guided the Paladins to 12 consecutive home wins versus SoCon opposition. "We are beginning to learn the character of this team. We are starting five freshman and they are growing as players and as a part of our team every day. I think the best soccer is yet to come for this group."

After controlling much of the possession in the opening 25 minutes, Furman broke through with the go-ahead goal at the 24:54 mark. Freshman Nieva Gaither split two defenders with a long pass down the left side and into the path of Isabella Gutierrez. The junior served a cross through the six-yard box that Anderson nodded past Chattanooga goalkeeper Ashton Shields from close range to stake the Paladins to a 1-0 lead.

Less than 15 minutes into the second half, Furman doubled its advantage on Jasmine Greene's first tally of the season. Once again, Gaither triggered the scoring opportunity with a perfectly weighted pass through the Mocs' back line. Greene ran onto the ball and slotted a shot through the legs of the goalkeeper at 59:57 to cap the scoring.

Corn made a pair of diving saves in goal to preserve the clean sheet and earn her first career shutout. Shields finished with five saves for Chattanooga.

The Mocs managed to hold a 14-12 edge in total shot attempts, but Furman boasted a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal and totaled eight corner kicks to just three for Chattanooga.

Furman will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, honoring seniors Josie Gillespie and Ellie Laxer prior to a 2 p.m. kickoff versus the second place Samford Bulldogs at Stone Stadium. Sunday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live statistics available through StatBroadcast. Log onto FurmanPaladins.com to follow the action.
