Spartanburg, S.C. – Courtney Hoffman had a team-high 16 kills to lead four Paladins in double figures as the Furman volleyball team rallied from two sets down to defeat the Wofford Terriers 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10) in SoCon action Monday evening from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Furman improves to 5-9 on the season and 5-9 in conference play, while Wofford drops to 10-5 overall and 10-5 in the league.
Hoffman was one of four Paladins that had double-digit kills finishing with 16 on .344 hitting, and compiled seven total blocks (three solo, four assisted).
Mikaela Schultz recorded 12 kills and
Kelsey Watkins posted a career-high 11. Watkins compiled a .391 hitting percentage for the match and Schultz finished at .321.
Maya Mrus added her third double-double of the season on 10 kills and 19 digs.
Katie Murphy contributed 26 assists and nine digs, while
Ella Abraham recorded 17 assists.
Andrea Aceveda led all players with a game-high 24 digs.
Riley Coonan had a game-high 17 kills for the Terriers, while Sarah Barham and Meghan Yaffa had 10 apiece. Yaffa also recorded a double-double with 16 kills. Emily Hodsdon picked up a double-double as well on 49 assists and 11 digs. Abbey Richman finished with 18 digs.
The first set featured a total of 10 ties and five lead changes as both teams traded the opening 10 points after
Sydney Tanner evened the score at 5-5 with her kill. Wofford had started the match scoring five of the first six points. Furman would lead by two points three times midway with the last coming at 15-13 on a kill from Hoffman. The Terriers came back with a 6-2 run to take a 19-17 lead after a Paladin attack error. Furman would close out the set on an 8-2 run. Hoffman was part of the final four points for Furman, recording two kills and two combination blocks with Schultz. Hoffman's kill gave the Paladins the 25-21 win.
Wofford started the second set on a 10-4 run before Furman fought back to trail 11-8 on Mrus' kill. The Terriers then broke the set open courtesy of an 11-6 run and led 22-14 after a kill by Kennedy Smith. Hodsdon gave Wofford the 25-15 victory several plays later with a kill.
The Paladins raced out to an early 7-1 lead in the third set, forcing a Terrier timeout, following a service ace by Mrus. Wofford responded by going on a 14-4 run to hold a 15-11 advantage when Coonan recorded back-to-back kills. Barham would keep the Terriers ahead by five, 19-14, with her kill. Furman answered by cutting its deficit down to 19-17 on a Wofford attack error, forcing the Terriers into a timeout. A Wofford service error would keep the Paladins within two at 20-18. The Terriers finished the set on a 5-2 run to win 25-20.
Furman trailed only once in the fourth set after beginning the frame on a 7-2 run, capped when Hoffman registered a kill. The Paladins would lead by as many as eight points, 13-5, after a service ace by Watkins. Wofford came back to tie the score at 16-16 midway following a Furman attack error. The Terriers evened the score twice after that with the last coming at 18-18. Furman wrapped up the set on a 7-3 run to secure the 25-21 triumph. Hoffman won the set for the Paladins with her solo block.
Furman got off to another fast start in the fifth set when it jumped out to an 8-1 lead after two errors by Wofford. The Terriers got as close as three points late when Coonan's kill made the score 11-8. Following a timeout, the Paladins responded with three consecutive points off kills from Mrus to sit at set point leading 14-8. Watkins won the set, and match, for Furman three plays later with her 11
th kill of the contest.
The Paladins concluded the match hitting .194 as a team, and held the advantage in kills (60-52), assists (54-49) and digs (80-70). Furman also led 9.0-8.0 in total team blocks.
The Paladins wrap up their regular season next week, March 28-29, hosting Mercer at Alley Gymnasium.
