Greenville, S.C. – Hannah Dintino and
Kyra LaMotte both scored five goals, while
Avery McIlwaine broke a program single-game record, on Wednesday evening as the Furman women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-5 non-conference victory over the Winthrop Eagles at Paladin Stadium.
With the win, Furman improves to 4-3 on the season and remains unbeaten at home with a 3-0 mark. Winthrop falls to 2-4 overall.
The quartet of Dintino, LaMotte,
Hannah Demis and
Lindsey Kelly combined for 21 points to lead the Paladins offensively. Demis provided a team-high six points on two goals and four assists. Dintino set a new career-high with five goals while LaMotte also registered five. Kelly compiled a career-high five points and three assists, while tying her career-best of two goals.
Sydney McClure collected a career-high three points on two goals (tied career-high) and one assist. McIlwaine won 12 draws and picked up four ground balls along with
Avery Whitehead. Whitehead,
Sydney Catts and
Katelyn Sousa both caused a team-high two turnovers.
McIlwaine set a new school record on Wednesday by winning 12 draws against the Eagles. She broke the previous mark of 11, which was held by both Catts (4/6/18 at Mercer) and
Morgan Franklin (4/14/18 vs. Detroit Mercy).
In goal,
Meghan Deehan recorded seven saves and allowed the fewest goals in a game for her career.
Lauren Morris and Bianca Tedesco led Winthrop with three points apiece. Morris provided two goals and one assist, and Tedesco one goal and two assists. Megan Dee picked up four ground balls and Lauren Asher won three draws. Alyssa Angelo caused a team-high two turnovers.
Sara McGuire and Kelsey Johnson combined for nine saves in the contest. McGuire registered seven saves and Johnson added two.
Furman raced out to a quick 4-0 lead and outscored the Eagles 8-1 over the first 16 minutes of the game. The Paladins received a pair of goals from Demis and Dintino during the run, while Kelly, LaMotte, McIlwaine and
Meagan Beal each contributed one. McIlwaine's unassisted goal with 14:08 remaining put Furman ahead by seven. Winthrop followed by scoring two of the next three goals and trailed 9-3 at the 6:01 mark. LaMotte and Dintino each scored for the Paladins over the final 3:43 to give them an 11-3 lead at halftime.
Furman continued its run into the second half, taking a 13-3 lead less than three minutes into the period off goals from Catts and Dintino. After the Eagles scored with 22:55 to go, the Paladins answered with a 6-0 run over a stretch of 13:58. LaMotte and McClure combined for five of the six goals throughout the run, while Kelly scored once. LaMotte's fifth, and final, goal of the game gave Furman a 19-4 advantage with 8:56 remaining. Winthrop got a late free position goal from Morris with 1:27 left to put the final score at 19-5.
The Paladins held a 33-15 advantage in shots, 26-17 in ground balls and 20-6 in draws. Furman limited the Eagles to just 1-of-7 on free position attempts and forced 19 turnovers.
The 20 draws won by the Paladins are tied for third-most in a game in program history, just one behind the school record.
Furman travels to Campbell on Saturday afternoon for a 12 p.m. opening draw.
