Johnson City, Tenn. – Three Furman pitchers combined to limit ETSU to just one run over 15 innings of work as the Paladins swept the Bucs 4-1, 4-0 in a Southern Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Betty Basler Field in Johnson City, Tenn.
Game 1: Furman 4, ETSU 1 (8 inn.)
Furman plated three runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 ties and claim a 4-1 victory over ETSU in the series opener.
Trailing 1-0 after three innings, Furman's
Mackense Greico belted a solo home run to right-center to even the game. In the top of the eighth,
Emily Bartlett singled up the middle for her third hit of the day and
Riley Ludlam followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Greico double into the gap to plate two runs and
Amanda Fleming drove in her sister, pinch runner
Chrissy Fleming, to increase the lead to 4-1.
Starter
Sierra Tufts, who held the Bucs to a single run on three hits before
Bailey Tanner (3-3) came on to retire the final batter in the bottom of the seventh, returned to the game in the eighth and wored around two singles to shut the door on ETSU. She allowed just one run on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings, while Tanner picked up the run by retiring the only batter she faced.
Bartlett went 3-for-4 at the plate and Greico finished 2-for-4 with a double, homer and three RBI.
Kelly Schmidt (7-6) suffered the loss for ETSU after allowing four runs on 10 hits over eight innings. Julia Fritz homered for the Bucs.
Game 2: Furman 4, ETSU 0
Furman completed the doubleheader sweep in game two as Tanner and
Shelby Basso combined on a three-hit shutout.
Tanner, who improved to 4-3, scattered three hits in five scoreless innings of work and notched five strikeouts before giving way to Basso, who retired all six batters she faced.
The Paladins' pitchers got all the support they would need in the first inning.
Natalie Morgan singled and scored on Ludlam's RBI double to give Furman the lead. Greico followed with a two-run blast, her seventh homer of the year and second of the day, to put the Paladins in front 3-0. Freshman
Claire Ginder added a two-out, RBI single the next inning to up the margin to 4-0.
Greico went 1-for-2 with a homer and a base on balls, while Morgan collected two hits.
ETSU's Allison Farr was charged with all four runs on four hits over one and two-thirds innings to absorb the loss.
