GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman overpowered Mercer, 6-1, Friday in Southern Conference men's tennis action at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won two doubles matches to claim the opening point. Mercer's Michael Durham and Samuel Barrow defeated freshman Emil Westling and senior Drew Singerman at flight three, then Furman answered with wins at flights one and two for the point. Seniors Henrik Atlevi and Jake Bhangdia beat Hugo Lobo and Lucas Wayenburg, 6-4, at number one, then senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Ben Cahill recorded a 6-3 advantage over Carver Arant and David Georgadze at flight three.
In singles, Furman won five matches, three in straight sets. Mitric topped Lobo, 6-3, 6-1, at flight one, and Atlevi came from behind to beat Arant, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, at flight three. At number four, Westling held off Georgadze, 6-1, 7-6(5), and Singerman posted a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Durham at flight five. Junior James Roelofse entered the Paladin lineup at flight six singles, where he downed Barrow, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.Â
Mercer (8-12, 2-2 SoCon) picked up a point at flight two, where Wayenburg defeated Bhangdia, 6-2, 6-4.
Furman (7-10, 4-1 SoCon) plays host to Samford Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
