Kennesaw, Ga. – Sydney McClure had a career-high six points and four goals on Friday afternoon to lead the Furman women's lacrosse team to a 16-14 victory over the Kennesaw State Owls at Sports Park Field 3.
Furman, who was won four games in a row and seven of its last eight, improves to 7-3 on the season. With the loss, Kennesaw State drops to 5-6 overall.
McClure came off the bench to lead the Paladins offensively with a career-high six points and four goals, while tying her career-best of two assists.
Hannah Dintino tied McClure with four goals, while
Meagan Beal and
Avery McIlwaine both scored twice.
Hannah Demis provided three points on a goal and two assists, and Lindsey Kelley added two points on one goal and one assist.
Kyra LaMotte and
Sophie Shaw each scored once. Demis picked up a team-high three ground balls while
Avery Whitehead caused two turnovers.
Sydney Catts won four draws.
In goal,
Meghan Deehan tied her season-high of 11 saves to earn her fourth consecutive win.
Hannah Barth scored a team-leading three goals off the bench for the Owls, and Marissa Gore posted three points on a goal and two assists. Four other players scored two goals apiece. Gore collected a team-high nine draws, five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Julia Weiss also picked up five ground balls. Payton Gregory tied Gore with two caused turnovers. Weiss recorded 12 saves in goal.
Kennesaw State scored with six seconds remaining in the first half and followed with back-to-back goals within the first five minutes of the second to hold a 9-6 advantage over Furman.
The Paladins answered with an 8-1 run over the next 16 minutes to take a 14-10 lead. McClure scored three of her four goals during that stretch, while Demis, McIlwaine, Dintino, Beal and Kelly all scored once. McClure's fourth goal of the game with 19:15 remaining gave Furman a 10-9 lead. After the Owls tied the game at 10-10, the Paladins registered four straight goals to go in front 14-10 at the 9:37 mark. Kelly's only goal of the contest gave Furman the four-goal advantage.
Kennesaw State answered with three of the next four goals and trailed 15-13 with 6:03 remaining. Shaw sealed the victory for the Paladins as her goal with 3:17 left put them in front 16-13. The Owls got a late goal with 14 seconds remaining in the game to put the final score at 16-14.
Overall, Furman outscored Kennesaw State 10-7 in the second half. For the second time this season, the Paladins trailed at halftime and rallied back to win the game. Furman trailed Campbell 8-7 at intermission on March 27 before coming back to win 15-14.
The Paladins attempted a season-high 40 shots in the contest and held a 19-14 advantage in draws. Furman also forced the Owls into 19 turnovers including 10 in the second half.
The Paladins step back into conference play on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Mercer for a 2:30 p.m. opening draw.
