Macon, Ga. – Behind a tournament record 21 goals on Thursday afternoon, the top-seeded Furman women's lacrosse team advanced to its third consecutive SoCon Women's Lacrosse Championship title game following a 21-4 victory over the No. 4 seed Wofford Terriers from Mercer's Five Star Stadium.
Furman improves to 12-4 on the season, tying the program's single-season wins record, while Wofford's season ends with a 2-9 overall record. The Paladins advance to Saturday's championship game where they will face the winner of No. 2 Coastal Carolina-No. 3 Mercer.
SoCon Player of the Year
Hannah Demis and
Kyra LaMotte, a First Team All-Conference performer, led Furman with a game-high seven points apiece. Demis had a game-high five assists and scored two goals, while LaMotte led all players with six goals and dished out one assist. Their seven points are tied for third-most in a game in tournament history. Demis' five assists are tied for the most in a game in tournament history and LaMotte's six goals rank second.
Demis became the Paladins' single-season points leader in the victory, surpassing the previous record set by
Abby Shields in 2017.
Avery McIlwaine scored a career-high four goals while
Sophie Shaw compiled a career-best four points on three goals and an assist. SoCon Freshman of the Year
Meagan Beal also provided a hat trick. SoCon Defensive Player of the Year
Avery Whitehead tied LaMotte and
Ellie Roser with two ground balls. Demis won five draws. In goal,
Meghan Deehan registered two saves and one ground ball.
Elizabeth Ralph scored a team-high two goals for the Terriers while Ally Furnari added two points on a goal and assist. Emma Gentile won three draws and three different players recorded one ground ball each. In goal, Aislinn Washburn and Kelsey Thompson combined for nine saves.
Furman scored 16 consecutive goals, including 15 in the first half, in a dominating effort. The Paladins netted nine goals in the opening 10:59 while limiting Wofford to just two shots in the first half. The final 8:32 of the opening half saw Furman receive goals from Shaw, LaMotte, McIlwaine and
Alana Epstein to hold a 15-0 advantage at intermission.
Beal concluded the Paladins' scoring streak to start the second half, scoring 2:50 into the period to give them a 16-0 lead. The Terriers answered with three straight goals to cut the lead down to 16-3 with 18:03 remaining.
Furman closed out the game on a 5-1 run over the last 15:46 with Shaw, LaMotte, Beal and
Lindsey Kelly each recording a goal. LaMotte scored twice during the run with her last at the 4:09 mark putting the final score at 21-4.
The 21 goals registered by the Paladins are tied for second-most in a game in program history and is the third time this season they have scored 20 or more goals in a game.
The SoCon Women's Lacrosse Championship title game is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
