Fairfax, Va. – Jacob Rylander's goal in the 95
th minute lifted the George Mason Patriots to a 1-0 overtime victory over the Furman men's soccer team in its season opener Sunday afternoon from George Mason Stadium.
Furman drops to 0-1 on the season while George Mason improves 1-0-1 overall.
Rylander started the possession for the Patriots after intercepting a cross just outside their 18-yard box. After crossing midfield, Rylander passed wide to Miles Montgomery on the near side of the field. Montgomery dribbled just near the touchline and laid up a cross back to the middle of the Paladins' 18-yard box. Rylander scored on the one-timer from 10 yards away, giving George Mason the victory.
The regulation period was a defensive battle as both teams combined for 12 shots during the 90 minutes with Furman attempting five and the Patriots seven.
Jake Raine led the Paladins with two shots, while
Callum Holland,
Jacob Garzon and
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan attempted one. Diaz-Santillan took the team's lone shot on goal. In goal,
Ben Roberts made three saves in his second collegiate start.
Montgomery took a team-leading three shots, including two goal, for George Mason while adding an assist. Rylander was one of five players who attempted one shot. Jackson Lee grabbed one save in goal.
The Patriots held an 8-5 advantage in shots and 4-1 in attempts on goal. George Mason also led 6-3 in corner kicks.
Furman returns to Stone Stadium for its home opener on Friday, September 3 to host Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
