Greenville, S.C. – Mario Arrocha scored the game-winning goal in the 102
nd minute to give the USC Upstate Spartans a 3-2 victory in double overtime over the Furman men's soccer team, Saturday evening at Stone Stadium.
Furman drops to 1-3 overall while USC Upstate improves to 1-3-1 on the season.
The Paladins took the early 1-0 lead in the 24
th minute from the combination of
Jacob Garzon and
Callum Holland. Holland received the throw-in far side near the 18-yard box and immediately made a pass to Garzon. Garzon dribbled to the top of the 18-yard box, beat one defender, and scored inside the left post for his first goal of the season. For Holland, it was his first assist of the year.
The Spartans equalized just over 20 seconds into the second half on a goal by Javier Torres. USC Upstate won possession on its side of the field and Xavi Wences made a long through pass to an open Torres, who dribbled 30 yards and scored past Furman goalkeeper
Ben Roberts.
The Spartans would take the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest when Paul Bobai scored off the rebound in the 81
st minute just inside the six-yard box. Arrocha's initial attempt hit the left post and Bobai connected on the put-back inside the right post.
The Paladins responded quickly in the 83
rd minute, tying the game at 2-2 when
Dylan Lane connected on his second goal of the season and
Miles Fenton receiving credit for the assist. Fenton made a long through pass from Furman's side of the field past the USC Upstate defense to an open Lane 20 yards from the goal. Lane's attempt from 15 yards deflected off the inside of the left post and went past the goal line for the tying score. The assist by Fenton was his second of the season.
Arrocha's golden goal came less than two minutes into the second overtime period. The Spartans intercepted a pass on the Paladins' side of the field and Jimmy James gained possession off a loft pass, dribbling to the touchline. James made a pass back to the middle of the 18-yard box to Bobai, who immediately deflected the ball to Arrocha allowing him to score.
The Spartans held a 16-14 advantage in shots and 7-6 in attempts on goal. Furman led 3-2 in corner kicks.
Fenton led the Paladins with four shots and was one of six players who had one attempt on goal. Roberts finished with four saves in goal.
Arrocha had a team-high five shots for USC Upstate while Torres registered three attempts on goal. Goalkeeper Luca Bulfon had four saves.
Furman concludes its four-game homestand on Wednesday, September 15 hosting Davidson at 7 p.m.
