No. 20 Furman Men Second; 33rd-Ranked Paladin Women Third At FSU XC Open

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The 20th-ranked Furman men's team placed second, while No. 30 women took third Friday at the Florida State XC Open Friday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla.

No. 4 Stanford won the men's race with 22 points, followed by the Paladins in second with 61 points.  Host Florida State, which was ranked 33rd in this week's poll, finished third with 83 points.  Furman also picked up wins over Power 5 schools Auburn, Clemson, and Miami.

On the women's side, top-ranked BYU scored 24 points to take the title, with 19th-ranked Florida State finishing second with 51 points.  Furman placed third with 83 points, beating out fourth-ranked Stanford, who finished fifth, along with Power 5 opponents Clemson, Miami, and Auburn. 

"I was very pleased with both teams performances today," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "Against several of the best programs in the country, we competed very well.  We take great pride in the fact that we have traditionally improved towards championship season, and we are showing a great launch point for our season."

Senior Daniel Bernal paced the Paladin men, turning in a time of 24:04.2 for eighth place, followed by sophomore Dylan Schubert in ninth place at 24:10.1.  Sophomore Ares Reading finished 12th with a time of 24:13.8, followed by senior Cameron Ponder in 13th at 24:17.5.  Freshman Gabe Montague was the final Furman scorer, crossing the line in 24:27.1 for 20th place.

Senior Aaron Wier finished 24th at 24:36.0, with senior Noah Dolhare right behind in 25th place with a time of 24:37.4.  Sophomore Carson Williams tallied a time of 24:40.9 for 28th place, and sophomore Andrew Hammel was 32nd at 24:52.1.  Freshman Foster Wilfong placed 54th with a time of 25:18.1, and rookie Nick Goldstein was 75th at 25:47.1.  

Sophomore Mac Roberts finished 113th at 26:32.5, and junior Nick Epstein recorded a time of 27:03.3 for 140th place.  Junior David Ahlmeyer was 190th at 28:20.8.

Sophomore Bethany Graham led the women for the second week in a row, placing seventh with a time of 20:56.4.  Freshman Kaylie Armitage was 14th with a time of 21:18.8, and sophomore Jonna Strange posted a time of 21:28.1 for 19th place.  Sophomore Emily Little finished 22nd at 21:34.4, followed by sophomore Megan Marvin in 23rd with a time of 21:38.5 to complete the Paladin scorers.

Junior Nicole Matysik crossed the line in 21:42.3 for 25th place, and freshman Meghan Ford was 29th with a time of 21:55.1.  Rookie Sierra Bower finished 55th with a time of 22:40.5, and sophomore Beth Donnelly placed 72nd at 22:56.7.  Sophomore Kylie Wittman was 125th with a time of 23:51.0.

Furman will compete at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind., Oct. 1.
