High Point Tops Furman, 3-1

GREENVILLE, S.C.. - Dylan Maberry hit .379 with 13 kills to lead the High Point volleyball team past Furman, 25-17, 25-13, 20-25, 25-13, Friday night at Alley Gymnasium in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins drop to 5-5 overall with the loss, while High Point improves to 8-4.

Freshman Bella Tolone recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs to pace Furman, while senior Neci Harris and sophomore Maya Mrus each added 10 kills for the Paladins.  Junior Sarah Turner posted a team-high 19 assists, and sophomore Ella Abraham notched 16 assists.  Junior Andrea Aceveda led the Paladins with 18 digs, while Harris, freshman Chandler Parker, and sophomore Kelsey Watkins each tallied three blocks. 

Mackenzi Thornburg recorded 19 assists to lead High Point, while Maberry posted a team-best 15 digs.  Jackie Joyce led the Panthers with five block assists.  

The Panthers got out to a quick 16-4 lead in set one before the Paladins put together a 6-3 run ignited by a kill by Tolone and a block assist from Harris and Mrus to cut the deficit to 19-10.  Harris scored a kill and a service ace to keep the Paladins in the match at 20-12, then the teams traded points to reach 22-14.  Mrus scored two kills, coupled with a kill from Harris, to bring the Paladins within six at 23-17, but High Point took the final two points and the set, 25-17.

Again High Point jumped out to an early lead in set two, 10-2, but Tolone scored three-straight kills to cut the lead to 10-5.  A kill and service ace by Tolone, together with kills from Mrus and Harris, kept Furman in the set, 16-9, but the Panthers outscored the Paladins, 9-4, to end the set with a 25-13 victory. 

Furman was back in the match in set three, outscoring High Point 10-6 to open the set off three kills from Tolone and a kill and block assist by Parker.  The Paladins maintained the advantage at 13-10, but the Panthers forced the first of six ties in the set, 13-13.  The teams traded points back and forth to reach 19-19, then Furman put together a 6-1 run with kills from junior Natalie Dunn, Turner, and Mrus to win the set, 25-20. 

High Point took a 11-5 lead at the beginning of set four and maintained the lead throughout the set for a 25-13 win.  Aceveda tallied six digs in the set, while Harris, Tolone, and Dunn each recorded two kills in the final set.  

The Paladins open SoCon play at Wofford Wednesday at 7 p.m.
