Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- Devin Leary passed for 259 yards and three touchdowns, and N.C. State used a 28-point second quarter and rugged defense to roll past FCS 25th-ranked Furman, 45-7, in football action Saturday evening at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The win improves N.C. State to 2-1 on the season while Furman falls to 2-1.
Leary's three scoring strikes came in the second period and covered 4, 42, and 12 yards. The redshirt sophomore from Sicklerville, N.J., completed 23-of-29 passes and also scored on a seven-yard run to account for all four Wolfpack touchdown responsibilities in the 28-point second quarter that sent N.C. State into the halftime locker room with a 38-0 lead.
The Wolfpack defense stymied Furman over the game's first 30 minutes, limiting the Paladins to just one first down and 49 total yards.
Travis Blackshear recovered a N.C. State fumble at the Wolfpack 49 on the game's opening possession, but atter moving to the N.C. State 31,
Timmy Bleekrode's 48-yard field goal missed.
Zonovan Knight, who led N.C. State's 218-yard rushing effort with an 11-carry, 104-yard performance, scored the game's first points midway through the first quarter on a 1-yard plunge to cap an 8-play, 69-yard drive.
The Wolfpack's Christopher Dunn made it 10-0 with a 32-yard field goal.
N.C. State dropped the hammer in the second quarter behind Leary's touchdown passes and his own 1-yard scoring dive. Â His 12-yard strike to Thayer Thomas with 24 seconds before the break extended the Wolfpack lead to 38-0.
Furman avoided the shutout when quarterback
Hamp Sisson connected with tight end
Ryan Miller on a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the third period.
N.C. State finished with contest with a 505-196 advantage in total offense. Â Furman managed only 92 yards on the ground.
Sisson found the mark on 8-of-19 passes for 86 yards.
Furman opens Southern Conference play next Saturday when it plays host to Mercer in a 2:00 p.m. contest at Paladin Stadium.
